You’re judging it wrong. Forest guards are not outdated , they’re standard security architecture worldwide. The US still runs active forest rangers + park law enforcement. Canada, Germany, Australia do the same. Why? Because ungoverned forests become safe havens for criminals and terrorists.

That’s exactly why bandits always keep victims deep inside forests, little to no permanent security presence there. Our forests have effectively become sanctuaries for kidnappers, terrorists, illegal miners, loggers. You cannot win a war against banditry while leaving vast stretches of territory under criminal control.

So are you expecting the military to start protecting forests too? The military is for warfighting, not 24/7 forest monitoring. Forest guards are specifically trained for forest security operations, that terrain, that threat. Their role goes beyond firefights, maintain sustained presence, deny bandits safe havens, gather local intelligence, and ensure forests no longer serve as operational bases.

And let’s be clear, The 1,000 forest guards initiative for oyo state are NOT for rescue ops to go get the kids in the bush. Their job is aftermath security, to protect the forests. Establish permanent presence, gather early intel, identify suspicious movement, deny criminals freedom of movement, and make forests uninhabitable for terror groups.

Please, don't come saying the military are capable they are already overstretched on all fronts, that why they are other agencies and paramilitary outfits. The role of the military isn't internal security to start with. So yes, forest guards are is the right means to secure of bushes and forests.
