4/ Creating a fully encrypted, Discord-style messenger was impossible due to latency & other tech limitations.
But Comm found a solution that functions even better for users ๐ฑ ๐
3/ Everyone in crypto uses Telegram, which is UNENCRYPTED ๐ฑ
Why?
Because encrypted messengers are mid.
And encrypted messengers for communities are nonexistent.
@Ashoat has built the solution with @CommDotApp ๐
got to join @thattallguy and @nnnnicholas on @seedclub Internet Explorers last Fri!

@pr4y3rh4nd5 @GrantSlatton@CommDotApp We've def spent time thinking about social sharding, but haven't had time to implement it. That's one of the reasons we believe that the keyserver needs to have a social layer... cryptography ultimately needs to be built around human behavior
@LeetAlpaca3@CommDotApp RE clients being out-of-spec, we're taking a Signal-like approach on that. We have one first-class client, and aren't focused on interop.
IMO there's no way to build a low-friction experience with a fractured client ecosystem...
@LeetAlpaca3@CommDotApp RE socmed, P2P, XMPP, etc I have my own opinion.
Users will never take a tradeoff for privacy. The product needs to be JUST AS GOOD (or better) as the non-private option.
The only way to get there is with personal servers. Without them, you're limited to Signal functionality.
@LeetAlpaca3@CommDotApp Love that you've read that piece from Moxie. I think it's important to recognize the tradeoffs he calls out... until people run their own servers, E2EE will be limited to Signal-like functionality, with all of Signal's tradeoffs around backup / discoverability / scale
@LeetAlpaca3@CommDotApp RE an audit, we use the Olm library for E2EE, which has been audited. Can also share a draft of our whitepaper if that's interesting
@GSkrovina@adamxlee@zjbrenner We're working on this at @CommDotApp. Big focus is nailing the inbox workflow for community messaging โ 100% agree that email is still the best inbox. Would love to chat!
This story is wild: a teenager joked in a private group chat โOn my way to blow up the plane (I'm a member of the Taliban).โ Message was intercepted over airport WiFi, reported to Spanish intel which scrambled jets, heโs now on the hook for $120k
Our mission is simple: build a messenger with full E2E encryption without sacrificing the features users love, like communities, reactions, roles, threads, and more. ๐ฏ
