Hello #medtwitter, I'm Ashvin, a medical student (5th year) currently intercalating in Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences in Birmingham. Myself and @thomasthorne16 have recently started a podcast @MedtimeStories where we share our experiences and stories of our medical 1/2
I have been raising this issue in a personal capacity for many months now, I am glad the BMA are entering into a new dispute regarding doctor unemployment.
Over half of our current F2 doctors will be unemployed in just one weeks time.
This needs addressing urgently.
Based on some recent conversations, I felt like a thread was needed on some of the issues surrounding medical training, and how they intersect with the long term workforce plan.
Buckle in for a long one
1/14 🧵
The Government says 6%+£1,250 is the final offer for junior doctors in England and that there will be no more talks on pay. I very much doubt that to be the case for a number of reasons. 🧵
1. Tomorrow i will be supporting the NHS #ConsultantsStrike
About Me:
➡️ I am a cardiology consultant / professor @UHNM_NHS
➡️ i was from a working class background, i went to a state comprehensive. My dad left school at 16, mum at 12. I am the first / only member of my family to receive a higher education. I received a student grant to go to @UniofOxford. I left med school with little debt.
I could not afford to train as a doctor now.
Re Junior Doctor strikes, the 'if you don't like it, get another job / go elsewhere' crowd need to rapidly learn that doctors are doing exactly that. It's (partly) why you struggle to see a GP, or it takes months to see a specialist. We simply do not have enough of them.
We’re extremely disappointed that the government is making calories on menus mandatory in England from 6 April.
We know it causes anxiety for people affected by eating disorders.
We know it can increase fixations on restricting calories for anyone with anorexia or bulimia. 🧵
I wish it was an April Fool's Day joke—but it's not. From April 2022, large businesses in Britain will be required to display calorie information on physical and online menus.
Read (and share) my post at https://t.co/yPGKgh5Qk8 on why I think this is a very, very risky idea.
