A “dear anonymous profile” drinks mostly Irish whiskey. I buy it, try it and maybe tell you what I think. Was in Asia, now just visiting. Occasional aeroplanes.
To Dad. From Beryl. Wishing you a very merry Xmas. 1943. Sitting in my local, looking at this, wondering how on earth and who and what and where it’s been before arriving here…
So in the last few weeks I’ve had Smithwicks in Las Vegas (it ain’t Las Schmegas) and now in Ottawa! I’m told it’s everywhere over here, across the pond. Amazing and great. Wonder where it’s being brewed? Smithwicks!!
Somewhere in the vicinity of Las Vegas and I’ve just had a pint of Smithwicks. Also this other thing. I’m sorry. Not about the Smithwicks. The other thing.
These are whiskey bullets. They perform two functions.
1) It is how Texans cool their drink without ice melting and diluting said drink.
2) It gets you and your family a free tour of @DublinAirport baggage transfer and screening under armed airport police supervision when you have it in checked baggage.
To be fair, they were very good about it, once I had explained the concept to them (still in the original packaging, wife had brought them to gift to me), and after some rather bemused close examination by the officer they escorted us to the front of the immigration line after the delay, which I appreciate.
Brought this back from the US. Keeper’s Heart blend of Irish grain, pot still and American Rye (43%). I mean, it’s got to be OK right? ‘Fugit Hora’ (feck the hoors).
Litre of #powersredlabel £16 is tremendous value. There’s also Bushmills 80/20 (£28.99), another good one to have on the shelf. Yeah, Redbreast a shadow of its former self and you’re right about the Copleys - but the Single Grain stands out. Am only talking prices, not selection.
Current prices in Heathrow LHR if anyone’s interested. Power’s Red Label a steal (£16.59). Tyrconnell is lovely (£19.39). Redbreast 12 rather good value (£49.49). Connemara on a twofer offer too (£39). All in the regular duty-free shop…
At the more upmarket World of Whiskies the selection is a little bit broader. Still can’t get my head around how Bushmills has messed up its styles so badly. Teeling single grain for the win. But not much to get excited about really.
@alex420_b Won’t go back to it in its current form - but that’s just me. Maybe others will love it. I’d say it’s a work in progress that needs more work.
Ardara Irish single malt 2026 edition (46%). Heavily peated. All grain in, it says. Chased this down last time I was home. Had heard many good things. Label says soft, rich and nutty. Well, no. This is wildly smoky, some would say unpleasantly so…
Me, I think it would be nice to find a little more sweetness in amongst the ash. Huge influence from what you’ve eaten or drunk just before, will completely change the experience. No cork, but the heavy screw top is a delicious design touch. One to watch.

@HiddenYorkshire Grew up with this. Best opening titles ever? But watched it all again very recently and it’s dreadful. Threadbare plots of semi-literate wannabe adult psychodrama with occasional UFOs that are never really explained (or dealt with). A great lesson in why you should never go back!
@whiskytip@kittyhen@waitrose Waitrose don’t understand whiskey. They stock the most random stuff and often discount in the most random way. For £35 I’d take a punt on this. Just about.
