Our students are AMAZING humans full of potential, grit, and compassion. In 2022, Asian Center youth programs served over 250 students, spending more than 5,000 hours developing immigrant youth across five programs with seven school partners.

Today we celebrated World Refugee Day with a potluck including Asian Center, ECHO Collective, and Lincoln Literacy staff. Shout out to Khamisa, long time Asian Center staff member and community leader, for sharing a few words before we ate.

Student favorites from the week included the Vietnamese lion dance and the wide variety of foods they got to sample.

Camp Culture Day 4

Today, Fadwa from Iraq taught our students about Yezidi culture. They even got henna “tatoos”. Then their families were invited to enjoy a recap of all that their kids learned throughout the week.

Students heard about Native American culture and made their own dream catchers. They learned an African dance and played a game where they practiced saying the names of different countries.

Camp Culture Day 2: The fun continues!

The kids learned about Colombia and competed in a sack race. They also learned about Ukraine, painted wood slices with traditional symbols, and played a game of silent tag with an embroidered blindfold. Who knew tag could be silent?! 😉

Today, students heard about Vietnamese and Chinese cultures, learned a few elements of Vietnamese lion dancing, and even tried on the lion head! Then they practiced drawing Chinese characters. Lots more fun to come this week, so stay tuned!

Today, we kicked off Camp Culture 2023! Camp Culture is the Asian Center’s annual summer camp where kids grades K-5 learn about the different cultures represented within our community through dance, music, food, and games led by representatives of each culture.

This morning, when our Vietnamese Seniors group met for their weekly gathering, they pooled their resources and gave almost $600 to support the Asian Center on Give to Lincoln Day!

Some of these folks have been Asian Center clients for many years. Each of them understands the struggle of acclimating to life in a new country.
