Hon. Minister of Agriculture, @FrankTumwebazek Greetings and congratulations upon your re-appointment sir.
How can a litre of milk in Kazo still fetch UGX 1,000 today the same price many farmers were receiving 15-20 years ago?
Everything else has declared war on the household budget. Fuel is up. School fees are up. Drugs are up. Farm inputs are up. Taxes are up. Labour is up. But milk remains chained to yesterday's economy.
A dairy farmer wakes up at 4am, battles drought, diseases, expensive feeds and veterinary costs, only to sell milk at a price that belongs in a museum.
Is Uganda rewarding production or punishing it?
Countries with far smaller dairy sectors pay farmers significantly more. Yet Uganda, one of Africa's milk powerhouses, continues to export poverty back to the very people producing the milk.
If we have surplus milk, where are the markets? Why are farmers carrying the burden of oversupply alone? Why isn't government aggressively hunting for export opportunities across Africa, the Middle East and Asia?
The cow has become Uganda's most patient taxpayer. It keeps producing. The farmer keeps working. Everyone along the value chain earns more—except the person who owns the cow.
Minister, what is the rescue plan before dairy farming becomes an act of charity rather than a business?
