1: The Adal Sultanate Located in the northern part of modern-day Somalia, the Adal
Sultanate (1415–1577) was a powerful Islamic empire. It played a significant role in
resisting Abyssinian Christian forces and Portuguese colonizers. Under its famous
general, Ahmad ibn Ibrahim al-Ghazi (Ahmed Gurey), the Adal Sultanate successfully
defended its territories and advanced into Ethiopian regions, becoming a symbol of
Muslim resilience in the Horn of Africa.

2: Ajuran Empire: The Ajuran Empire (14th–17th century), which dominated the
southern part of Somalia, extended its rule over much of the Jubba and Shabelle river
valleys. The empire's strong centralized government was marked by a highly structured
taxation system and efficient management of agricultural production. It also fortified
key cities and oversaw a flourishing trade network. Ajuran rulers constructed elaborate
irrigation systems to support farming, which made the region agriculturally prosperous.
This ability to manage vast resources and protect its people against external threats
allowed the Ajuran Empire to thrive as a regional power for centuries. This civilization
challenges the notion that Somalis lacked organization or government.
