My take on Pakistan-led mediation efforts in the ongoing US-Iran war.

Let us get one thing straight. There’s no mediation in any war until both sides are looking for a door, even if it’s only half-open. What Pakistan is doing is not diplomacy in the classical sense. It is what it has always done best since 1947: courier service for bigger powers.

Pakistanis are simply over-romanticising their mediation role, as if Islamabad woke up one morning and decided to become Switzerland. The Pakistani military is not a conventional national institution. It evolved as a rent-seeking security enterprise, trading geography and access for Western money, weapons, and validation. From the Cold War to the Afghan jihad to the post-9/11 outsourcing of counterterrorism, the model has remained unchanged. Offer services, promise deliverables, take the dollars, and keep the domestic contradictions unresolved. This is also the same Pakistan that has, quite literally, sold its own citizens in exchange for American cash and goodwill.

During Biden’s presidency, Pakistan was largely frozen out. Then came the May 2025 India-Pakistan conflict and Donald Trump’s predictable ego politics. When India refused to credit him for a ceasefire that New Delhi insisted was bilaterally achieved, Pakistan saw an opening and exploited it. Trump’s public sulking became Islamabad’s diplomatic entry ticket. Washington, as always, played along, not because it trusts Pakistan, but because it knows Pakistan is usable.

Even Trump has repeatedly called Pakistan out for duplicity, from the Afghan double game to Osama bin Laden. The Americans know what Pakistan is. But states do not operate on trust, they operate on utility.

The funny part is the theatre around it. One day, Pakistan leaks that it is facilitating talks. The next day, it refuses to confirm anything. Iran first dismisses the entire process as fiction, then suddenly welcomes ‘brotherly efforts of Pakistan’. This back-and-forth is exactly how these channels are kept alive while everyone protects their domestic narrative. These statements are released and withdrawn depending on whether the talks are moving forward or stalling. When things derail, everyone denies. When things move forward, signals start coming out again.

And the optics matter because both Washington and Tehran are now looking for an exit without humiliation.

The US did not plan for a long war; it wanted a sharp, controlled campaign to impose costs and restore deterrence. But Iran’s retaliation turned out to be more damaging than expected. With US aircraft going down, and America being forced into expensive rescue operations with real losses and real risk, the entire escalation ladder has become very costly. At this point, a ceasefire is becoming more of a political necessity for Donald Trump than a strategic preference for the US.

Iran, for its part, needs an exit too, but it cannot afford one that looks like surrender. The recent tactical successes also give Tehran just enough leverage to negotiate without looking like it is begging.

This is where Pakistan becomes useful. Not credible, not decisive, but useful. A convenient venue, a familiar military-to-military backchannel, and a state desperate enough for relevance.

If a ceasefire comes through Islamabad, Pakistan will celebrate as if it authored history. It will project itself as a power for global good, even though it cannot maintain peace with its own neighbours. This is a country perpetually at odds with India, locked in regular disputes and border fighting with Afghanistan, occasionally trading fire with Iran, and internationally known more for exporting instability.

So yes, Pakistan may get its headlines. It may even get a photo-op. But let us not confuse noise with stature. This ceasefire will be temporary, fragile, and transactional.

Pakistan, as usual, loses nothing either way. If the war pauses, it gets headlines. If the war resumes, it will still keep playing both sides.

Systemic oppression of Muslims in India? Please. Indian Muslims enjoy constitutional rights, representation, and freedoms that minorities in Pakistan can only dream of. So, spare me the victim theatre. Also, almost all Indian Muslims voted for Partition, got their ‘exclusive homeland’, and yet millions of them still stayed back and are being treated as equal citizens, not as a conquered population. The entitlement is endless.

And your sermon on ‘Israel’s genocide’ and ‘America bombing sovereign nations’ is even funnier. Pakistan literally acts as a courier for US and Israeli interests when it suits them, including backchannel messaging to Iran. Also, if bombing a sovereign nation is a crime, then Pakistan is guilty too, because you bomb Afghanistan every other day.

So don’t preach morality from a state built on hypocrisy.

Also, the irony is unreal. India has one of the largest numbers of mosques anywhere in the world, and none of them are getting bombed by the majority or flattened by the State. Meanwhile, in Muslim-majority countries, mosques are routinely blown up by fellow Muslims, sectarian groups, militias, and the very regimes that claim to be guardians of Islam. So f**k off.
