Au #Togo, la situation du poète et défenseur des droits humains, Honoré Sitsopé Sokpor, dit « Affectio », suscite désormais l’inquiétude de la Rapporteuse spéciale des Nations unies sur la situation des défenseur·es des droits humains, Andrea Bolaños Vargas. « J'ai reçu des informations préoccupantes concernant M. Honoré Sitsopé Sokpor », a-t-elle écrit, avant d'ajouter : « Il se trouverait en détention arbitraire et aurait fait l'objet de coups et de mauvais traitements, en lien avec l'exercice légitime de son droit à la liberté d'expression et d'accès à l'information. »
Dans sa publication faite la semaine dernière, elle a exhorté le gouvernement togolais à :
- garantir sa sécurité ;
- le libérer ;
- diligenter une enquête indépendante sur les allégations de mauvais traitements ;
- garantir un environnement sûr et propice à la défense des droits humains.
Honoré Sitsopé Sokpor a été arrêté le 24 avril 2026 à #Lomé, alors qu’il photographiait un chantier public.
Tournons La Page rappelle que défendre les droits humains et exercer sa liberté d’expression ne doivent jamais conduire à la répression.
Nous appelons les autorités togolaises à prendre toutes les mesures nécessaires pour garantir les droits et la sécurité de Honoré Sitsopé Sokpor et à répondre aux préoccupations exprimées par les mécanismes internationaux de protection des droits humains.

Silence in the Face of Persecution Is Not Faith

Many Christian communities in the Middle East have embraced persecution as if it were their destiny. They submit to it instead of resisting it. At times, some have even sought martyrdom or viewed persecution as punishment from God for their sins. This is bad theology from the start.

Jesus never taught us to seek death. He came that we “may have life, and have it abundantly.” He taught us to be wise. He told his disciples to flee when persecuted. He taught us to confront injustice and bear witness to the truth.

Justin Martyr, during one of the harshest periods of Roman persecution, did not remain silent. He wrote a bold defense of Christianity and appealed directly to the Roman authorities.

Jesus himself confronted Saul: “Why do you persecute me?” When Jesus warned his disciples that persecution was coming, he was preparing them for it, not declaring persecution their destiny or commanding them to surrender to injustice.

Paul escaped at night in a basket. He also used his Roman citizenship when necessary to protect himself from unlawful punishment. He did not consider avoiding persecution a lack of faith.

Peter did not stay silent either. He publicly confronted the leaders of his time over the rejection and crucifixion of Jesus. His words pierced people’s hearts, and thousands eventually joined the Church.

The disciples prayed during times of persecution. They prayed against it and asked God to intervene. They did not simply accept persecution as something that should continue without resistance.

Christianity did not conquer Rome by embracing oppression as a permanent destiny. The early Christians endured persecution without surrendering their faith, defended the truth, challenged injustice, and ultimately changed history.

Persecution is not our destiny. Silence is not a virtue when others are being oppressed.

Stand against persecution. Speak against injustice. Make your voice heard. We can change history.

Those of us who lived under dictatorships, or in countries with big governments, and were liberated both physically and culturally, because many remain slaves though they are physically freed, know there is nothing in life more precious than freedom.

Never, ever choose big government for the promise of a better economy.

As long as there are poor people, the temptation will exist to hand power to humans, who will inevitably abuse it, on the promise of helping the poor. And if that happens, it will be the end of America.

Freedom gets you the best of everything.

The economy you have while you still have your freedom is the best economy achievable in this fallen world.
