I wrote 5 defensive layers against the same bug in my Unity card game.
Only on the 5th did I realize: I was fixing symptoms.
The root cause? A duplicate object in the scene file.
Rule: at the 3rd defensive layer — stop. Find the root cause.
🌊 Chronology of Events
On December 15, 1900, the steamship "Archtor" noticed the absence of the lighthouse light; the ship "Hesperus" arrived on December 26 and discovered an empty lighthouse with fueled lamps, unmade beds, and stopped clocks. No one greeted the vessel, no flag was flying, and a single oilskin remained hanging; relief keeper Joseph Moore was the first to inspect the building.
🌊 Circumstances on the Island
The western pier was severely damaged by the storm: a box was smashed at a height of 33 meters, rails were torn out, and a one-ton stone was moved; no trace of people was found either on the island or in the rocks. One chair was overturned, but the kitchen was clean, indicating they left after eating; bodies were never found.
🌊 Official Investigation
Superintendent Robert Muirhead concluded that the keepers (James Ducat, Thomas Marshall, and Donald MacArthur) descended to secure equipment during the storm on December 15 and were swept away by a giant wave. Captain Harvey noted in a telegram: "Poor fellows, they must have been blown over the cliffs or drowned trying to secure a crane."
🌊 Theories
Peculiar entries in the log—(crying, prayers) spawned numerous theories.
Island Spirits: Local resident Karey Miller claimed that ancient spirits were avenging the lighthouse construction, conjuring a storm and dragging away the keepers; previously, builders and rowers had perished.
Giant Birds or Sea Monsters: It was believed that an enormous seagull or sea serpent had abducted the men; similar myths intensified the legend of the "cursed" island.

The Last Keeper playtest has been opened
The Last Keeper is a psychological horror game with voice commands with an oppressive atmosphere of Howard Lovecraft.
During the day: you maintain the lighthouse and forge, repair machinery, fish. You read the notes of the previous caretakers.
At night: investigating the mystery of the island. You're trying to survive and not go crazy.
Your decisions affect the ending.
Basis: historical — the disappearance of the caretakers on Flannan Island (1900). The team recreated realistic details: archival forms, the construction of lighthouses of the XX century.
