The Houston Astrodome opened 59 years ago today, on April 9 1965. It was the world's first multi-purpose domed sports stadium. The Astros played the New York Yankees in an exhibition game. Yankee star Mickey Mantle said, "It reminds me of what I imagine my first ride would be like in a flying saucer." Mantle hit a single and a home run in the game, which went into extra innings, but the Astros won 2-1. So many memories here!

The Arcane Texas Fact of the Day:
Using a fishing pole, on Jan. 6, 1991, "Big Lou" McEachern of Beaumont successfully cast a lead weight over the top of the Astrodome.. Lou, who stood 6'7" and weighed 320 .lbs, used a 13 foot eight inch fishing rod and a five-ounce weight to make the cast. He was only given one chance. Said Big Lou, "I never once had a worry about it or a doubt." Big Lou had reason to be confident: he'd already cast a weight 817 feet. When Lou made his Astrodome cast, he did it into a slight headwind and missed the observer on the other side, who was wearing a hard hat, by about 10 feet.

"The Astrodome is not just ingrained in the HOU identity; in many ways it is HOU's identity. A muscular feat of climate-controlled [engineering] erected to convince a skeptical nation that a pro baseball team could inhabit one of its hottest climates." https://t.co/HOlYBkQvub
