Some have claimed that “Cha Eunwoo could face jail time,” but the National Tax Service (NTS) does not accept ‘pre-assessment review’ requests for tax offenders. A tax industry official told Edaily on the 30th: “If the NTS had determined through its audit that Cha was a tax offender, he would not be eligible for a pre-assessment review. Since Cha’s review is ongoing, the NTS does not view this as a case to report to prosecutors as a tax offense.” He added, “The NTS only reports cases to prosecutors when the evasion methods, such as fraud or double bookkeeping, are severely illegal and malicious”[...].

Cha’s audit began last spring and proceeded over the usual period of about four months, finishing before his scheduled military enlistment at the end of July. The timing of sending the audit results was not delayed because Cha is a famous celebrity.

A tax industry official explained, “For the NTS, ensuring the taxpayer pays is the most important thing. They naturally consider the taxpayer’s convenience regarding the timing of summons and notice delivery, and this applies generally to all taxpayers, not just specific individuals.”

Hello, this is Cha Eunwoo.
I sincerely bow my head in apology for causing many people worry and disappointment due to various recent matters related to me.
Through this incident, I am deeply reflecting on myself and questioning whether my attitude toward fulfilling my duty as a citizen of the Republic of Korea particularly my obligation to pay taxes was sufficiently strict and responsible.
Over the past several days, I have spent time reflecting, thinking carefully about what I should say first so that even a small part of my remorse could be conveyed to those who were hurt because of me.
I worried that a long explanation might sound like an excuse or cause further fatigue, but I ultimately came to believe that it was my duty to speak directly and offer my apology regarding this matter.
As I write this, I have just finished my daily duties within my unit. Although I am currently serving in the military, this was by no means an intentional choice to avoid this controversy. Last year, I reached a point where I could no longer postpone my military enlistment and therefore enlisted before fully concluding the tax audit process.
However, since this misunderstanding also stems from my own shortcomings, I feel a deep sense of responsibility. If I were not serving as a soldier, I would want to personally visit everyone who may have been affected by this issue and bow my head in apology. With that same sincerity, I am writing these words now.
For the past 11 long years, despite being someone with more shortcomings than strengths, I have been able to stand in the undeserved position of “Cha Eun-woo” today thanks to the boundless love and support you have given me. Because of that, even if I cannot properly repay all those who trusted and supported me, as well as the many people I have worked with, I feel indescribably sorry for causing such great hurt and exhaustion.
