Virtua Fighter is one of the greatest games of my life. When I was a kid, one of the items on my bucket list was to have an original Virtua Fighter arcade machine at home.
As I got deeper into collecting arcade games, I eventually acquired the Model 1, Model 2, and Model 3 boards that powered the Virtua Fighter series. Unlike most arcade hardware, these systems are incredibly large and complex, which made it difficult to enjoy them properly. I’m probably the only crazy person in the world who would build something like this. 😆
I always wanted to create a setup that would let me use them more conveniently, and after years of planning, I finally built a Model board selector. Out of all the custom projects I’ve made, this is the one I’m most attached to, and it’s also the one I use the most.
A lot of people ask how I built it or whether I’d be willing to sell one, but it’s extremely complicated to make and surprisingly expensive. Because of that, I’ve only ever built a single unit. I’m probably the only crazy person in the world who would build something like this.

That is md-gpu-demo, a brand new demoscene-oriented showcase running on real Atari ST / STE / Mega ST / STE hardware with a SidecarT plugged in. The RP2040 draws into a 320x200 chunky framebuffer, and the Atari side gets tear-free 50 Hz updates, palette changes, keyboard input and sampled audio.
What is inside the showcase:
- Animated boot menu with a rotozooming SidecarTridge backdrop, palette beating, keyboard navigation, on-screen timing readouts
- Uridium-style parallax with layered starfields, metal grids, transparent scrolling surfaces, a controllable ship
- Filled 3D vector object: fixed-point rotation, projection, backface culling, shaded ST palettes
- Multi-sprite stress demo with swarms of animated sprites and transparent blits
- Cojorotozoom intro: rotozoom, bitmap scroll-text, palette ramps, transparent texture sampling, sprite overlays
The point is to explore the overlap between the SidecarT's compute budget and the visual style of ST-era intros. Rotozoomers, scrollers, sprite swarms, parallax, palette tricks, vector objects... all running on real Atari hardware plus the RP2040 powerhouse.
And do not file this away as a pure demoscene playground. Every effect here is also a solid foundation for full-blown ST / STE / Mega ST / STE games that want to squeeze every last cycle out of the RP2040. Parallax shooters, vector-based combat, sprite-heavy arcades, rotozoom intros wrapped around your own title screen, you name it.
The whole thing is built on top of md-framebuffer-template, the starter framework we are about to announce. So if any of these effects sparks an idea, you have a working reference plus a clean template to fork from.

Basado en MCPE 0.6. Con muchas optimizaciones y arreglos para que pueda correr a mas de 30 FPS!
Lo mas complicado fue el tema de la RAM y VRAM. La consola solo cuenta con 32MB! Pero adaptandolo bien a la VU1 se pudo lograr!
