Three reasons to use Near Foot, Near Shoulder technique when you tackle.
1. Maximize Power & Limit YAC - Using Near Foot, Near Shoulder allows all of a player’s force from their power step to transfer through their shoulder and into the runner, which helps limit yards after contact.
2. Defend the Cutback - By targeting for Near Foot, Near Shoulder contact, you are tracking the runner’s Near Hip. This reduces the runner’s cutback options and allows the defender to easily adjust if the runner does cut back.
3. Limit Head Contact - Near Shoulder contact puts the defender’s head behind the runner, removing their head from potential contact and rotational force.

It may be April Fool's Day, but this is no joke. One of the core pillars of the Atavus Tackle System is to improve player safety. Year after year, Atavus teams experience just this. Teams who use the Atavus system see a 50% reduction in head contact, while allowing them to play a dominant game!
Through our film analysis, across all levels of the game, on average, players make head contact on 8% of all tackle attempts. Teams that implement the Atavus system see head contact instances go down to just 4%.
All data per Atavus Tacklytics database. Atavus has analyzed over 100,000 tackles at all levels of the game, in which data was collected from.

We definitely hear your points and understand where you are coming from. We would love to connect on a call and set up a film session on tackling with you and discuss our approaches. Please just let us know and we would love to make that happen.
Some context on Atavus and these numbers. We have been around for 10 years working with programs at all levels of the game on their tackling. Our approach and technique is very detailed and structured, focusing on Near Shoulder technique as well as multiple other elements of pre-contact and contact, which includes support from a white-paper study. Through this approach, we have analyzed hundreds of thousands of tackles, including those at the NFL and D-I levels. And this system has been implemented over the years by teams such as the Seahawks, Panthers, Ohio State, Oklahoma, and more.
In our analysis, one the elements we track for every tackle is what part of the body makes contact with the runner, and if it is their shoulder, we track whether it was near shoulder or far shoulder (head across). For context for the number, these show the difference between near shoulder and head across when shoulder contact is made. I think we something we can all find common ground is that when shoulder contact is used by the tackler, that is the most effective way to tackle, regardless of near shoulder or head across. We don’t disagree that head across is effective, the numbers show it is. These numbers for both situations are elite. What they show is that both are effective, but when Near Shoulder contact is made, tacklers are slightly more effective. And something to add for context, we see tacklers using Near Shoulder occur 83% of the time and head across (far shoulder) just 17%. These numbers show tacklers’ average performance when Near Shoulder or Head Across is used.
We agree though there is more to it than just what shoulder you use. Other elements of technique are needed, such as a strong punch, wrap, leg drive, and striking at the proper point of the runner. But in our system, we cover those techniques to ensure using the Near Shoulder is effective.
We agree that the sport is chaotic and that situations are different and players putting their head across the ball carrier will happen. But we believe using the Near Shoulder can be applied in all situations for performance, but also to improve player safety to limit head contact and rotational force.
We would love to hop on a call anytime to discuss more. We love talking ball and hearing different perspectives.

For years now, the great debate in tackling technique has been whether using the Near Shoulder is as effective as using the head across.
The results are in. Not only is it as effective, but it is more effective. When players use their Near Shoulder, they experience better performance. More made tackles, more effective tackles, and allow fewer yards after contact.
Ultimately, if you use your shoulder, whether it be near shoulder or far shoulder (head across), you will be an effective tackler. But if you are looking for that 1% edge, Near Shoulder is the method to use.
