Well, fuck the original Monday Morning Hot Take.

King Charles just handed me another one.

Following reports that Prince Harry and Meghan Sussex plan to reconnect with British charities, Charles authorized the Lord Chamberlain to circulate a formal letter clarifying their status.

The British government, military, diplomatic service and Royal Household were reportedly reminded that the Sussexes remain non-working royals.

Their charitable and commercial activities are private.

Their HRH styles remain in abeyance.

They do not represent the Crown.

Thank God they cleared that up.

For a moment, somebody might have seen the King’s son helping sick children or supporting wounded veterans and mistaken compassion for a royal engagement.

The original Sandringham agreement established all of this six years ago. Prince Harry and Meghan Sussex never claimed they were returning as working royals.

But the Palace still found it necessary to formally remind the British establishment that their charity work does not belong to the Crown.

Since King Charles has suddenly found his voice, perhaps he can clarify something else:

Are they safe?

Not whether Meghan’s visit to a women’s charity counts as a royal engagement.

Not whether Prince Harry’s work with WellChild represents the King.

Are his son, daughter-in-law and two young grandchildren adequately protected while living in Britain?

The letter reportedly says security questions should be directed to the “appropriate authorities.”

How convenient.

When the monarchy’s boundaries need protecting, Charles can authorize a formal letter to some of the most powerful institutions in Britain.

When his family’s safety is involved, suddenly it is somebody else’s department.

No, Charles does not personally control RAVEC. But he has a voice. He has influence. He is a father, a grandfather and the head of state.

Where is the statement expressing concern about Prince Harry’s safety?

Where is the urgency for Meghan Sussex, a biracial woman who has endured years of racist abuse and threats?

Where is the concern for Archie and Lilibet—his mixed-race grandchildren—who are beginning school in Britain?

The Palace can remind the entire country that the Sussexes are private citizens, but apparently cannot bring itself to remind the country that they are still human beings.

More importantly, they are still his family.

Nobody seriously believed Prince Harry and Meghan Sussex had secretly returned as working royals.

So why was this clarification necessary?

Because they might help people too visibly?

Because cameras might photograph them?

Or because the Palace is terrified they could live in Britain, serve communities independently and succeed without needing permission from the Crown?

Charity does not belong to the monarchy.

Compassion does not require the King’s authorization.

And the British public is not so fucking stupid that it cannot tell the difference between a formal royal engagement and two private citizens supporting causes they have championed for years.

If King Charles can authorize a letter telling the British establishment what Prince Harry and Meghan Sussex are not, he can find the courage to say what they still are:

His son.

His daughter-in-law.

His grandchildren.

His family.

The Palace found its voice when the monarchy’s image needed protecting.

When it comes to protecting the people carrying the King’s own blood, all we hear is procedure, distance and silence.

And that silence may be the loudest statement King Charles has made yet.

Public spanking? Huh? Harry never said he was returning as a full-time working royal, and the Palace explicitly said “there is no change to the current status.” The guidance simply reiterates the existing arrangement.

Harry and Meghan have also had their own media-access policy since 2020, when they explicitly said they would no longer participate in the Royal Rota and would instead engage with a broader range of media. That is not the same thing as creating “their own Royal Rota.” And there’s no evidence they personally gave The Times an exclusive announcing one.

What Harry and Meghan do or want to do is already out there for you to find. You don’t have to make up stories. Dislike them, fine. But creating a narrative and then fighting against your own creation is insanity.
