Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’oei says he held a phone conversation with Vietnam’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nguyen Minh Hang, where he conveyed the anxiety of Kenyans over the impending execution of 37-year-old Kenyan woman Margaret Nduta Macharia and formally requested a stay of execution to allow diplomatic negotiations between the two countries.

Nduta, who was sentenced to death for drug trafficking after being found guilty of smuggling two kilograms of cocaine into Ho Chi Minh City, has become the subject of growing appeals from Kenyan leaders, human rights organizations and her family, all urging the government to intervene and secure her release or a reduction of her sentence.

Kenya’s diplomatic mission in Bangkok is actively monitoring developments.
