Deputy Speaker @Thomas_Tayebwa has arrived at the parliamentary parking lot to preside over the official opening of the MPs' orientation programme.
In his opening remarks, Tayebwa urged members to read and research more to enhance their quality of debate. #12thParliamentStarts
Rt. Hon. Jacob Markson Oboth, the newly elected Speaker of the 12th Parliament of Uganda, delivered a powerful inaugural address marked by gratitude, humility, and a clear governance agenda.
Key highlights from his speech:
✅ Thanked God for the moment, describing his election as divine providence guided by scripture (Isaiah 60:22 & Habakkuk 2:3)
✅ Reflected on his humble beginnings in Muafu, Tororo District, attributing his rise to God’s grace and perseverance
✅ Expressed appreciation to the NRM leadership, the Parliamentary Caucus, and fellow MPs for entrusting him with the Speakership
✅ Pledged to serve all Members of Parliament, including those who did not support his candidacy, with fairness and impartiality
✅ Emphasised that Parliament must serve the interests of over 45 million Ugandans, not individual or partisan interests
✅ Committed to a corruption-free Parliament anchored on integrity, accountability, and transparency
✅ Stressed that accountability must begin within Parliament before extending to the Executive and public institutions
✅ Called for a results-oriented legislative process where Bills, motions, and budgets directly address citizens’ needs
✅ Promoted an open Parliament that embraces media as a partner in enhancing transparency and public trust
✅ Underscored stronger and more proactive oversight to prevent misuse of public funds in real time, not after losses occur
✅ Urged unity among MPs to restore public confidence in Parliament and strengthen institutional credibility
✅ Promised continuity of character, humility, and service as he assumes the highest office of the Legislature
“To God be the glory,” he concluded, calling for service rooted in humility, honour, and dedication to the Republic of Uganda. #12thParliament
