🚨 David Moyes on Everton’s mentality in the 2-2 draw against Manchester United:
🗣️ Moyes: “The thing I enjoyed most was actually what happened after we went 2-1 down.
Sometimes you concede a late goal and you can see the players accept what’s happening. Heads go down, somebody starts forcing passes and suddenly the game disappears from you.
I didn’t see that from us.
If anything, going behind seemed to annoy them.
We pushed the line higher. We chased everything. Every time United cleared the ball, somebody wanted to put it straight back into their box. The players weren’t interested in accepting 2-1.
And then Ainsley [Maitland Niles] gets the ball where he gets it.
I’m standing there thinking, ‘Keep it alive. Put it back into the box.’
He obviously had a slightly better idea.
That’s an unbelievable strike. Ninety-sixth minute, your team needs a goal and you produce that. You can’t ask for much more.
But that’s why I enjoyed the goal so much. It wasn’t something that appeared from nowhere. We’d spent those final minutes behaving like a team that genuinely believed another chance was coming.
Ainsley [Maitland-Niles] just made sure we didn’t need another one.
That’s the mentality I want here. If there’s still time on the clock, there’s still something in the game for Everton.”
Folarin Balogun would become the sixth American man to appear in a match for Everton, all of whom have are in the United States’ National Soccer Hall of Fame 🤯
