Today, we had the honor of hosting the Sandy Springs Police Chief and his commanders for a tour of the Atlanta Public Safety Training Center.

Among them was Officer Guy, whose father, an APD officer, made the ultimate sacrifice in 1975. During the visit, Officer Guy paused at his father’s memorial bench a powerful moment of remembrance and legacy.

Background: Detective Samuel Milton Guy was shot and killed while moonlighting at a local hotel.

He confronted two men who were robbing the cashier and was shot in the shoulder and thigh. The suspects then stole his pistol and $275 from the register. The suspects remained free for 24 years until an anonymous tipster confirmed evidence implicating them.

Both suspects were arrested in 1999 and charged with murder. In April 2002, one of the suspects was found guilty of assault with intent to rob and sentenced to 12 years. That suspect also turned state's witness against the other suspect, who was convicted of murder and faces life in prison.

Detective Guy was a United States WWII veteran and had served with the Atlanta Police Department for 19 years. He was survived by his wife and son and two daughters.

Yesterday (3/13) was moving day for the Atlanta Police Department’s Mounted Patrol Unit, the first to move into the new facility.

About a dozen horses were groomed and loaded into trailers, heading to their new barn at the Public Safety Training Center in southeast Atlanta.

The upgraded stables feature cushioned floors and more space, providing better comfort for the horses. Outside, there’s also plenty of room to run and train.

The Police Department and Atlanta Fire Rescue are expected to relocate to the 85-acre site this spring.

Training Together to Protect ATL

This Spring, the Atlanta Public Safety Training Center will open its doors, providing a cutting-edge facility where police officers, firefighters, and other city employees can train together in an innovative environment. The Training Center features a stimulation center, designed to provide real-life scenarios, along with specialized spaces for high-rise drills and other emergency response exercises. As the City of Atlanta continues to strengthen our commitment to ensuring the safety of all residents and visitors, our first responders are eager to share their thoughts about the new training center.

The next Community Stakeholder Advisory Committee (CSAC) meeting will take place on Thursday, Dec. 5 at 6pm. As always, these meetings are held quarterly and are view only for non-committee members.

Atlanta's E-911 has implemented new technology upgrades that significantly improve call answer times.

These advancements allow operators to better prioritize and manage emergency calls. The upgrades help reduce the time it takes for calls to be answered, ensuring quicker responses and more efficient handling of emergencies, ultimately leading to improved public safety outcomes.

The @Atlanta_Police , in collaboration with the @ATLFireRescue , the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, is actively working to identify and apprehend two arsonists responsible for the destruction of construction equipment at a site on Memorial Drive SE.

The APD believes this act of arson is linked to opposition against the construction of the new Public Safety Training Center.

Police Chief Darin Schierbaum has affirmed his commitment to ensuring that those responsible are brought to justice.
