"When the Most High apportioned the nations, when he divided humankind, he fixed the boundaries of the peoples according to the number of the gods"
Deut. 32:8
A Plea for Justice
A Psalm of Asaph
82 God has taken his place in the divine council;
in the midst of the gods he holds judgment:
2 “How long will you judge unjustly
and show partiality to the wicked? Selah
3 Give justice to the weak and the fatherless;
maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute.
4 Rescue the weak and the needy;
deliver them from the hand of the wicked.”
5 They have neither knowledge nor understanding,
they walk about in darkness;
all the foundations of the earth are shaken.
6 I say, “You are gods,
sons of the Most High, all of you;
7 nevertheless, you shall die like men,
and fall like any prince.”[a]
8 Arise, O God, judge the earth;
for to thee belong all the nations!
Psalm 82
Any pastor, movement, or organization that puts another message above Christ and His Gospel and as its primary motivation for existing. This includes:
✅ Churches / movements based on politics
✅ Liberation theology
✅ Prosperity theology
✅ Marian sects
✅ "We're Christians too" cults
✅ Universalists
✅ Podcast culture / views over doctrinal truth
IMO, the last might be the most dangerous in our current culture. Many people will watch a podcast or follow a personality just because they claim Christianity and agree with the viewer on political/social issues. Meanwhile, the "influencer" is spiritually and doctrinally bankrupt. Be careful who you follow.
So her Dad showed her Christ-like gentleness, forgiveness, and compassion, which in turn caused a heart of love and respect for her Dad....
But, he was a weak man?
His "failure" was having an intentional conversation with his daughter in the midst of her punishment? Even in her own post, she says, "I had parents that loved me enough to DISCIPLINE me in the Lord."
You didn't make this post to help men become stronger, you made this post out of your contempt for Lizzie. Your post is more about detailing Lizzie's past and baselessly blaming it on her Dad from one isolated example (which was actually incredibly Christ-like of her father).
"You are the weak man!" - Nathan the Prophet, probably
@PostDisclosure Maybe! I can see that.
I just don’t think beauty or benefit settles truth. Since religions make competing claims about ultimate reality, they can’t all be true in the same sense.
They could all be false, but they can’t all be right.
Let us ask Mary, Queen of Peace, to teach us to renounce hurtful words, hasty judgment, gossip, and slander. May we learn to cherish and nurture love within our families, among friends, in the workplace, on social media, in political debates, and in Christian communities, so that hatred may give way to hope and peace. #ApostolicJourney
Ryan, that’s fair, and I’m not saying Spielberg framed it as people abandoning faith or that he was attacking Christianity.
The specific line I’m talking about is when he says the movie takes the position of the church and asks what this does to the fundamental beliefs many of us have. Then his example is whether God is only our God on this planet, or a god for every system with intelligent life.
That’s the question I’m calling naive from a Christian standpoint.
Disclosure could challenge plenty of assumptions. I’m not denying that. But Christianity does not teach a local planetary deity. It teaches God as Creator of heaven and earth, the visible and invisible, all things.
So I’m not being sensitive about it. I’m saying that particular question is not a live doctrinal problem for Christianity. It would challenge vague religion or pop-spirituality much more than historic Christian belief.
I hate to be that guy, because Bible apps really do have their place.
But if you’re in the comments looking for an alternative, just buy a physical Bible and use that for the bulk of your reading and study.
Preferably not a study Bible either.
There’s something healthy about opening the Bible without being immediately surrounded by reading plans, notifications, commentary, and whatever else the app puts in front of you.
Michael, respectfully, I get why it sounds strange from the outside.
But Christianity is not defined by using Christian words. It matters what those words mean.
Mormons affirm a divine Jesus, but not the same doctrine of God, Christ, or the gospel taught in historic Christianity.
Paul warned about someone preaching another Jesus than the one we proclaimed, and said that a contrary gospel should be rejected, Gal. 1:8, 2 Cor. 11:4.
That is why Christians make the distinction.
Again, you seem to be replying to "Christians" on X in general rather than my statements. I meant challenge in the same way you are stating.
I don't think Spielberg is attacking or demeaning anything, not intentionally. I'm simply saying his specific question around who God is naive and wouldn't be a question Christians would have. If God isn't who He claims in the Bible then Christianity isn't worth following. One of the very first claims made in the Bible is that all Creation was made by Him.
Ryan, I ask that you read me charitably as well. I never claimed that Spielberg claimed it would cause abandonment of faith.
I used "challenge" to convey what he said in the clip, which was "What does this do to the fundamental beliefs many of us have?"
Then, he gave an example question. I'm simply relaying that I don't think his example question would be a challenge to Christians or a question that Christians would even have. Still, I'm extremely curious to see if his film contains messaging around the topic of who God is and what God's relationship to us and other intelligent life might be.
"No need to debate anymore." sounds like exactly what Satan would want you to say.
If I love my neighbor, like I'm commanded, then I must share with them the truth that leads to salvation and eternal life and speak against false Gospels that would lead them to eternal separation. Gatekeeping truth is hateful and evil.
"Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’"
- Matthew 7:22-23
This post invokes two thoughts.
1. I think a holistic understanding of the narrative of Scripture answers many of these questions. At least, indirectly. So I don't think it would rattle Christians as much as it is often thought of, assuming the Bible is the source of truth. (which, of course, we'll disagree on)
2. I think many people, Christians included, misunderstand the purpose of the Bible. The Bible doesn't need to answer any questions as it's purpose is centered around Jesus and God's relationship with humanity, not around being a historical, scientific, or philosophical textbook.
I'm sorry Spielberg, but nothing in your film would have any knowledgeable Christian "second-guessing" who God is.
The Bible is clear on who God is and His relation to creation, humanity, and other "deities." Either the Bible is true or it isn't. If it is true, which Christians believe that it is, then the "who is God" question is firmly answered.
Steven Spielberg says his upcoming alien film, Disclosure Day, will have Christians "second-guessing" their beliefs.
"Is God our God only on this planet, or is God a God for every system where there's civilization?"
I didn't say that. I cannot know your salvation, I can only be assured on my own. However, I do know that we're saved by faith not by being 100% doctrinally correct. So I'd be happy to embrace you as a brother, assuming we're both genuine in our faith, when this life is over.
Of course, the other comment under my original post is correct. It comes down to which God and gospel a person actually follows, but that would take a more nuanced conversation as no two anti-trinitarians or trinitarians believe the exact same thing.
