I live near Kansas. It's been really windy and dusty all day. Seems like somebody should have written a song about this by now.

It's all about the low end. And getting the bass guitar to fit well in your mix is crucial to having a full mix.

Using the low pass filter really keeps it locked in, focusing on what the bass does best–filling in that low end.

What's your favorite instrument at church? Let me know!

"Why does my vocal sound muddy?" "How do I make them sound consistent?"

Dialing in your vocals is one of the most common and, at times, biggest challenges church sound techs have.

There's a lot you can do to create an awesome sounding vocal with effects and plugins, no doubt.

But you always need to have the foundation of the vocal sounding clean, clear, and consistent.

You can start with just using your HPF, and applying simple compression techniques most boards have available.

Get to that strong starting place, and then get creative!

[Attaway Audio @AttawayAudio]

Compression is one your best friends when it comes to mixing at church.

One key factor to a consistent vocal is correctly applying compression.

It minimizes how much a vocal can jump out at your congregation's ears, as well as boosts the lower levels when using makeup gain appropriately.

Just make sure not to over compress your vocal.

That's never fun for anyone.

You'd be surprised just how powerful the High Pass Filter is on vocals for your church's mix.

The HPF clears up all those pesky low frequencies you don't really need on a live vocal.

Bringing clean, clear, consistent vocals–and it helps removes plosives, too.

Now you still need to adjust your EQ on other parts of the vocal, but adding the HPF is always step one for me.

Where do you start when EQing a vocal?

Let me know!

This is especially useful when someone accidentally tinkers with your system too much, and they leave it kind of in a mess.

(it happens)

Being able to recall everything you worked hard to setup is SO relieving.

The base scene also creates structure for your team to build upon.

Remember: structure creates a foundation for the team to lean on.

@lukedsimmons Great post. I don't know how many times I've been stressed out because the expectations for success weren't crystal clear. I've switched to making sure I seek out those expectations and success metrics just so it doesn't happen again.

A well-organized console makes mixing easier for your whole sound team.

Group channels, label them clearly, and stick to a consistent layout.

Staying organized is key to building a confident sound team.

Confident volunteers = smoother mixes.

Get these right, and your entire church will reap the fruits of having a properly designed sound system.

No matter how skilled your sound tech is, a bad system design will hold them back.

Speaker placement, tuning, and console setup matter more than you think.

With less distractions, proper dynamics, and clarity from both the worship leader and your Pastor–your church can focus on the reason why they are at church in the first place:

To receive the Word of God, in community with fellow believers.

Mixing isn’t just about pushing faders—it’s about leading the team.

Your team needs:
✅ Clear expectations
✅ Training & feedback
✅ A system to follow

A well-led sound team delivers a distraction-free worship experience.

If your sound system isn't running at it's best, you may have a weak link somewhere.

Is it speaker placement? System tuning? Console setup?

Identifying the real problem helps you make the biggest impact in improving your mix.

[Attaway Audio @AttawayAudio]

Try taking a step back and identify where the problem may be.

Often issues with sound aren't entirely the person who is running the mix's fault.

If your system isn't designed and setup properly, even the best sound techs can encounter problems.

90% of feedback issues can be prevented before service starts.

✅ Proper mic placement
✅ High-pass filter
✅ Speaker positioning

Nothing is more frightening than the sound tech solo.

Feedback is nothing really to be afraid of though. Just set up your system properly, and identify those problem frequencies. If your system is designed correctly, there shouldn't be much feedback!

If everyone in the room has an opinion on the mix, you’ll never win.

You need a style guide—a clear standard for how things should sound.

Define your mix before Sunday. Clarity removes the guesswork.

Remember: have at least ONE person who can be your go-to person to provide feedback/encouragement for your team.

This is super beneficial for your sound team.

A well-structured tech team creates clarity, consistency, and a sense of order during our church services.

[Attaway Audio @AttawayAudio]

Great mixes come from consistency—not just talent.

A simple weekly checklist ensures:
✅ Startup goes smoothly
✅ Volunteers have something to follow
✅ Nothing gets missed

Write it down. Make it clear.

Watch how your team becomes SUPER consistent each week.
