Reading that Jose and 6 other boys in the study ended up in prison reminded me that it really is a systematic oppression that these boys face. Even when someone intervenes like Rios, they still end up behind bars. It has to be a community effort to change perspectives #so345
#so345 while reading about all the times the boys try to get back up and “go legit” only to be pushed back down by law enforcement or authority figures I could help but wonder how many times someone can get back up and at what point do they just give up.
Following up on my tweet from chapter 4, I found the idea of misrecognition interesting. While the boys could be misrecognitizing how to “go legit” the PO are placing unreasonable demands on the boys.
Arrested is not a difficult goal for middle and upper class teens who are supported by the adults surrounding them. PO seem to not have a grasp on the barriers that exist for marginalized youth and are then upset when the teens don’t meet expectations (2/2)
