In the case of The Dark Knight, the Shepard Tone creates a sense of relentlessly building tension, perfect for Batman’s hopeless pursuit of the Joker – and used subtly in the sound design, so the audience doesn’t even realize it’s affecting them!

15 years ago, #TheDarkKnight introduced the Batpod, an iconic vehicle that sounds like it’s always accelerating. The sound team achieved this by using the Shepard Tone, an auditory illusion that seems to constantly rise in pitch...

It consists of a superposition of sine waves that are separated by octaves. The bass pitch moves upward on each sine wave separately so the sound is always rising. Christopher Nolan has this illusion in many films, including The Prestige and Dunkirk

The sound design of combat in this movie is so realistic that the United States Marine Corps plays it over speakers during The Crucible, a 54-hour final exam simulating battle.

25 years ago, #SavingPrivateRyan took audiences as close as a movie can to the experience of combat. In addition to meticulous sound design, Gary Rydstrom used lo-fi BBC optical recordings of real WW2 battles for authenticity

Rydstrom believes that an innocuous sound can be made horrific if used right. Case in point: the sound of bullets underwater was taken from recordings he had done of fly-casting for The River Runs Through It.

After months cooped up on the dubbing stage, the sound team took a “workation”: to record sounds for the bath house, they traveled to Kusatu, a Japanese town known for its hot-spring resorts.

Spirited Away came out 22 years ago in Japan, a year before its American release. Studio Ghibli has ties with the creatives at Pixar, and paid them homage: the sound of the jumping lantern outside Zeniba’s house is taken from the Pixar Logo...

Foley artist Toru Noguchi wore a different shoe on each foot when recording walking sounds to subtly differentiate the steps. He wore different mismatched pairs of shoes for each character...

Miyazaki was meticulous about accurately portraying Chihiro’s father’s car, a first-generation Audi A4 sedan. In addition to portraying the unique functions of the model, the sound team rented that exact car and recorded it for the scene instead of using stock car sounds

Buried sound effects added to the spine-tingling atmosphere: when Lorraine has a vision in the cellar, a little girl’s scream from earlier is layered with a demonic whisper. When the pictures fall off the wall, a child can be heard laughing.

The Conjuring came out 10 years ago and closing your eyes couldn’t stop the horror: Wan put special emphasis on sound, so if the audience looked away, they would still hear the scares and be terrified!
