Past Is Prologue: Washington’s Betrayal of Canada, Then and Now
This is not the first time the United States has betrayed Canada.
As Prime Minister Mark Carney resolutely steers Canada toward Europe in an unprecedented move to forge closer ties with the European Union, let us recall that back in the 1970s, another Prime Minister—Pierre Trudeau—attempted to distance us from the American "Ogre" following a terrible betrayal...

Here are the details:

The "Nixon Shock" of 1971: the United States betrayed all its allies, including Canada, by abandoning the Bretton Woods monetary system overnight—and without notifying anyone.

Since 1944, the global economy had rested on the Bretton Woods agreements: the US dollar was pegged to gold (at $35 per ounce), and all other currencies were pegged to the dollar.

However, at the turn of the 1970s—with inflation rising in the US and the country mired in the Vietnam War—other nations lost confidence in the health of the "Greenback" and demanded to redeem their US dollars for actual gold bullion.

The US panicked and abandoned the system without warning. They also decided to impose a 10% tariff on all goods entering the country.

Neither the IMF nor US allies were given advance notice of this decision.

In Canada, Prime Minister Trudeau learned of it while watching television...

Ottawa—whose economy was already deeply integrated with that of the US (the Auto Pact dated back to 1965)—requested an exemption on these grounds, arguing that Canada would suffer more than anyone else from this abandonment.

Washington remained deaf to these pleas, coldly declaring: "The dollar is our currency, but it's your problem."

The immediate consequences for Canada were devastating: its currency surged, surpassing the historic milestone of parity with the U.S. dollar. As an export-driven economy, it suddenly found its products too expensive for its main customer—the U.S.—to which it also had to pay 10% tariffs.

Just as in 2026, faced with this betrayal by Washington, Prime Minister Trudeau decided to reduce reliance on the U.S. by diversifying the economy... the "Third Way" policy...

However, this course was not pursued long enough or with sufficient determination; Canada reversed course by signing the 1988 free trade agreement, thereby sealing its fate with that of the Americans.

Long-term perspective:

For the US, it was a “success” in that it secured the dominance of the US dollar and, to a certain extent, protected its domestic economy. Yet, this shock move triggered the worst decade of global inflation.

Repeated currency crises, aggressive financial speculation, and the massive indebtedness of modern states , all trace their origins to the end of Bretton Woods.

For all those surprised—and there are many of us—by this mercantile, soulless, and friendless US, the fault lies with us. We forgot HISTORY and its great lesson: Past is prologue.
