There is growing xenophobia in China.

This is not [mainly] caused by the foreigners, but rather Chinese women. Specifically, Chinese women who worship foreigners.

The main gripe stem from the fact that these Chinese women asks for extremely high standards when it comes to Chinese men, such as bride's price and owning a house. But when it comes to foreign/ western men, these women asks for nothing, even provide these foreign men with money like paying for dates.

This extreme double standard is caused by Chinese neo-feminism, which is centered around the extraction of financial benefits and social status from people (usually men). This, by the way, is the direct cause of the collapsing marriage rate in China.

The growing xenophobia lives in this wider environment, intolerance of interaction with foreigners have reached such a high degree, that sometimes rather innocent posts like the one below gets blasted.

2 Chinese girls minding their own business taking photos, a white male comes up to them and complemented their looks and wanted to take a photo with them, according to the poster they parted their ways. Quite a normal interaction. However, due to the placement of their arms, it looked like the girls where holding the arm of the white guy, but they are holding their own arms. The poster were blasted by the comments, forcing them to turn off the comments.

Although not entirely innocent, the girls did post this image as a form of self-gratification, of being complemented by a foreigner.

This type of backlash is the exactly what many people, including myself warned about. Chinese neo-feminism basically painting a large target on the backs of every women in China, instead of helping women, it reinforced stereotypes.

Personally, I think a little xenophobia is good, it weeds out the foreigners who are in China just to take advantage of our people. Only in relationships based on equality and mutual respect, can you have real friendships. Nothing good comes out of blind worship, even if the foreigner has no ill-intent initially, acquiescence to their whims will only incentivize them to take advantage of you.

In the Zhuangzi, a famous story tells of a large, twisted tree that carpenters ignore because its wood is unsuitable for construction. Precisely because it is considered “useless,” the tree is never cut down and survives to live out its natural life.

Zhuangzi uses the tree as a metaphor for human life. In Daoist thought, being “useful” by conventional standards can make a person vulnerable to exploitation, control, and exhaustion. Those who are unconventional, overlooked, or unwilling to fit society’s expectations may instead preserve their freedom and live on their own terms.
