Many don’t know it. But you can get a faculty while you’re STILL a PhD student.
Many students did it.
It especially happens at ‘top ranked’ universities. They often extend offers to PhD students who are close to graduation.
Why?
I think there are several reasons:
1⃣ The student can still go for a postdoc, but this postdoc will be 200% more valuable. When you already know you will be a faculty at a top university, you will direct your postdoc time in the most efficient way, getting the most value out of it. You will have no uncertainly about the future.
Just focus on getting new experience, diversify your skills and learn the best practices before starting your own lab.
Often, you can use startup funds to pay for your postdoc position in almost any lab.
2⃣ The tenure clock will start ticking only when the position officially starts. By that time, the student will already be building his / her own research program. It’s like an earlier start in a sprint (tenure).
3⃣ Some departments want to catch great talents before others can recognize them.
▫️
📍 But how can you make it? My understanding is this:
When hiring so early, committees often look for these points:
1. Outstanding recommendation letter from the PhD advisor.
2. Experience in an outstanding lab with a well known PhD advisor.
3. Excellent and visionary research proposals. This is always a must.
4. Fit with the position. Poor fit = no invitation.
5. In some cases, it's also a topic that is just emerging but will clearly grow into something BIG soon.
▫️
You may wonder - but isn’t it risky for a top university to make such hires?
My observation is - nope.
Getting a tenure at a top universities is often not much harder than at the lower ranked place (and yes, I do think so).
They have more resources, stronger students / postdocs, better facilities, outstanding colleagues/mentors, and a lot of extra support.
Yes, criteria are higher. But if you’re ambitious and use the resources to your fullest ability, experience shows that getting international recognition won’t be a problem.
