Being proud to be LGBTQ is not about saying someone is superior for being gay. Pride exists because, historically, LGBTQ people were treated as less than human for simply existing. People were arrested, beaten, fired from jobs, denied housing, rejected by churches and families, and even killed just for loving someone of the same sex or being transgender.

That is exactly why the Stonewall uprising happened in 1969. Police regularly raided gay bars in places like New York, humiliating and arresting LGBTQ people simply for gathering together. During the raid at the Stonewall Riots, people finally fought back after years of abuse and harassment. Stonewall became a symbol of refusing to live in fear and shame anymore. Modern Pride exists because of moments like that.

Most straight people never had laws telling them their relationships were illegal. They never had to hide who they loved to avoid violence or rejection. That is why many straight people do not think about “straight pride” — society already accepted them by default.

So when LGBTQ people say they are proud, it usually means:
“We survived hate.”
“We stopped hiding.”
“We are no longer ashamed of who we are.”

Pride is not about arrogance. It is about dignity after generations of being told you should feel shame for existing.
