Chris Urmson: "Using combination of simulation and real world testing with human verifiable output of the Aurora driver and clearing our safety case framework which is 4.5 million of tests, we have tamed the long tail of self driving. $Aur #auroradriver#selfdriving#superhuman
@SawyerMerritt Well that’s just exactly what Tesla is doing 😂
What they will find is that it’s easy to get to 99% and then super hard to solve the long tail of the distribution.
Chris Urmson: "The people who believe that you should just use cameras because people drive using their eyes, the obvious response to this is, cars don't have legs they have wheels which much better.
We should use whatever engineering hacks we can to go make driving safer"

The human-perceived RGB is image 1 and the Tesla AI photon count reconstruction is image 2.
This is why Tesla FSD can see so well at night or through extreme glare.
Chris urmson quote from May 26,2025 interview:
Tesla FSD with camera is technologically awesome but I think they are not going to be able to cross a chasm,
that been there is a fundamental difference between helping a driver versus replacing the driver.

Aurora Driver led by Chris Urmson is at the tip of the spear in Autonomous Logistics.
Jensen himself endorsed it in a video released by Nvidia on 29th October 2025.

Because FSD was trained on public real world data it included some driver habits which were undesirable.
Thats why it always feels it's almost there, the long tail of the last 2-3% is hard to close & no measurable way to correct this behavior. Back to HD mapping and retraining.
Essentially there are no shortcuts with performing safety case. The customers will eventually demand evidence on Safety of AI driver irrespective of sensor suite or Advanced AI tools.
$AUR Aurora with ARM at 100% is here, peers pursuing catchup have atleast a year of work left.
In $kdk earnings call management cited they were able to accelerate kodiak driver development due advancement in New AI tools released last year.
Aurora has stated the long development time is a must to undertake 4.5 million safety tests to have conviction on AI behavior. $AUR
Yes, NHTSA has authority under the Safety Act to issue FMVSS mandating minimum sensor types (e.g., LIDAR) for ADS vehicles if they deem it necessary for safety.
They've chosen performance-based rules instead—vehicles must achieve safe detection/response outcomes, tech-agnostic. No current or planned LIDAR requirement.
Given the forum's innovation focus and admin push to cut barriers for robotaxis, prescriptive hardware rules aren't expected.
Duffy firmly noted, reinforcing that the NHTSA will demand rigorous safety validation from these companies before granting widespread deployment approvals.

Aurora Innovation just received 4 key patents on the same day (March 10, 2026):
• Smart amplifier protection for the new FirstLight LiDAR (enables higher power and 1,000 m range).
• Dual Radar system (wide front + narrow rear scanning).
• Advanced motion prediction with global neural graphs.
• Automatic generation of labeled data with correlated timestamps.
It looks like Aurora is fortifying its second-generation kit right before launching its new fleet of trucks with International. Moat fully protected just ahead of the real scale-up in autonomous trucking.
Peter Lynch one of the greatest investors in the world achieving an annual return of 29.2% between 1977 and 1990 and author of 'One up on Wall Street' talks about use of AI in long haul trucking.

$AUR: Legendary investor Peter Lynch on @TheCompoundNews podcast two weeks ago praises autonomous trucking as the future of long-haul transportation and says it’s more important than AI.
Can’t get a bigger validation than that!
Truck hauling 80,000 lb. at 60 miles/hr would need large perception range to detect & take actions than a robotaxi.
FirstLight Lidar can see 1km ahead; doing trucking first solves hardest task; Moving to smaller vehicles will be eaiser because of less harsher demands.

The next generation of FirstLight, our proprietary FMCW lidar, now detects objects at ~1,000 meters away (2x the distance of our current generation and the closest FMCW lidar competitor!).🎯 This is a game-changer for long-range, high-speed trucking. More range = a new standard for safety in the industry. ⚡
@AdamBanton@aurora_inno Yes, 20 truck are on road at moment all have observer in them, they don't drive the truck.
If the lane is under development there will driver actively monitoring the truck. By Q2 2026 trucks will start having no drivers inside. 200 driverless trucks by end of 2026.

Nvidia has released a new video of CEO Jensen Huang taking a 2.5 hour ride across San Fransisco in a Mercedes using Nvidia's Alpamayo autonomous driving system.
Jensen: "The two of us were just talking and enjoying San Francisco. This is the way transportation should be. 100% comfortable and 100% confident. Completely revolutionary."
Chris Urmson from @aurora_inno at NHTSA Safety Forum in March 2026:
"We're at the tip of the spear for this physical AI revolution that's happening.
We don't just have a thing that we think works, but that we know works and have conviction in that."
