They were further north than usual, and summer was ending. Clouds gathered overhead; not black and stormy, but gray and gloomy. Gray too were the tossing waves. Little wisps and curls of mist rose from them, and writhed over them like restless spirits.
Ian McKellen as Gandalf. He shaped the performance using a recording of Tolkien reading The Hobbit, copying the voice and the mannerisms. So you are not just watching him play Gandalf, you are hearing Tolkien come through the character.
