Just to be clear, the purpose of my page and these interviews is to shine a light on Australians abroad, both young and experienced, who often go completely unnoticed.
Exposure matters. Recognition matters. Opportunities come from being seen.
I know for a fact that Football Australia do NOT actively keep tabs on most Aussies playing overseas, and that’s a real shame.
If this platform can help even a few players get the attention they deserve, start conversations, or force change, then it’s worth it.
Australian football talent is everywhere. We just need to stop ignoring it. 🇦🇺⚽️

We sat down with Australian-Turkish defender Deniz Sen, currently plying his trade in Portugal, to talk about his journey, family sacrifices, playing style, and inspirations.

Q1. How did your football journey start, and when did you know you wanted to become a professional?
I started playing football at the age of four, and from that moment I was obsessed with the game. At 12, things became much more serious when I began playing NPL football. Training intensified, expectations rose, and sacrifices were required at a very young age.
Initially, that took away some of the joy, and I didn’t enjoy my first two seasons at NPL level. But around 14, I realised that if I truly wanted to become a professional footballer, I had to accept the hardships that came with it.
At 15 and 16, I had my best seasons in Australia, playing U16s and U18s at Mounties Wanderers. After overcoming many challenges, that small taste of success made everything clear to me, I wanted this career, and I haven’t looked back since.

Q2. Did you grow up supporting any clubs in Australia or Turkey?
In Australia, the only club I somewhat followed was Sydney FC, mainly because Alex Del Piero was playing there. I wasn’t a diehard supporter.
Growing up, I supported Beşiktaş in Turkey. They’re my club, the team I truly love and identify with when people ask who I support.

Q3. How has your family influenced your career and supported your move to Europe?
Without my parents, I wouldn’t be where I am today. They’ve been with me from the very beginning and have had a massive influence on my career.
In 2022, they made the huge decision to send me to Portugal at just 17 years old, fully supporting me financially and emotionally. Living alone in a foreign country at that age wasn’t easy, but they trusted me and believed in my dream.
For two years, they continued to support me until I was able to support myself. I’m forever grateful for their sacrifices, and everything I do is to make them proud.

Q4. How would you describe your playing style as a centre-back?
I’d say my playing style is a bit unique here in Portugal. For my size, I move quite well and am comfortable on the ball, which helps me stand out.
My strongest attributes are my long diagonal passes, heading ability, and defending 1v1 situations. That said, I still have plenty to improve, especially tactically, with body positioning and pressing.

Q5. At 1.96m, how do you use your physical presence to your advantage?
My height definitely helps in aerial duels and certain defensive situations. Early on though, it felt like a disadvantage, I struggled with agility, acceleration, and changing direction due to my high centre of gravity.
I worked extremely hard on those areas and improved significantly. Portuguese football is very fast and sharp, which challenges me constantly, but that’s what pushes me to get better every day.

Q6. Which defenders do you model your game on?
Van Dijk and Rúben Dias.
I watch Van Dijk because I see similarities in our physical traits and playing style, even though he’s obviously on another level. He’s one of the best centre-backs in the world, so learning from him is invaluable.
My current head coach encouraged me to study Rúben Dias, particularly his body positioning and ability to anticipate danger before it happens.
