Not an app. Not social media. On the device itself. Your camera. Your photos. Your messages. Scanned before they can even be encrypted.

I am sure it comes as a surprise to no one that Australia has experienced one of its longest periods of declining per-capita living standards while government spending, debt and taxation have continued to expand. The numbers tell the story well. Australian Government spending has surged from around $130 billion to nearly $160 billion per quarter. Spending now sits at around 26–27% of GDP. Debt continues to grow. The budget is back in deficit and the money supply keeps expanding rapidly.

Yet Australians are now working harder than ever while finding it harder to buy a home, harder to pay their bills and harder to get ahead. A government should be judged by its outcomes and its not announcements. If government spending keeps rising while living standards keep falling, Australians are quite entitled to conclude that the current economic strategy simply isn’t working.

South Australians seem to always be paying more and getting less. When just three children in DCP care can reportedly cost taxpayers $3.8 million a year, it’s fair to ask whether the system is delivering value for money or simply consuming ever-larger amounts of our public funding.

SA Labor’s answer to almost every problem that exists seems to be spending more and more money. The real challenge is ensuring that those dollars actually achieve better outcomes for vulnerable children and their families. Taxpayers deserve accountability, transparency and results, not endless cost blowouts and non stop bureaucratic expansion.
