Paint
By Jac Winters, January 1, 2018
They say true happiness blooms within,
But that dismisses those who paint our lives.
Not a day passes where I don’t feel whole,
Lifted by friends who sprinkle hope
When defeat bows my head low.
My life’s a sailcloth, stretched wide and bare,
Your presence trespasses its empty weave.
Each soul I cherish, I need them all—
Their vibrant strokes complete my scene.
You can’t force love to linger,
Yet those who stay wield brushes divine.
They tint my canvas with tangerine glow,
Lemon’s bright slash, and rouge’s bold hue,
Freeing my soul to soar anew.
On days when life stains my spirit black,
You swirl clouds of ivory and endless blue.
A smile breaks through; I’m born again,
Chaos and loss erased by your hand.
Each day, you reach with music and light,
Dashes and splashes of color compose
A masterpiece from ashes and strife.
I lift my shoulders, my eyes, my heart—
A vibrant human, risen once more.
Your pastels parasol my world with flame,
Orange and red like a thousand fires.
Without you, meaning would fade to gray,
My spark extinguished, uninspired.
As I tread this path, paved just for me,
I’m blessed with vignettes, speckles, and streaks—
His bold stripes, her warm, wavy seas.
When my painting’s done, may it gleam
Like a Monet, Degas, or da Vinci’s dream.
Your masterpiece, a gift I inherit,
Polished and bright, forever I’ll cherish.
@manda_dodge This gave me chills. That blurred line between reality and madness is such a haunting premise and set in 1952? Count me all the way in. Is she aware of the shift, or is it more like reality unravelling beneath her feet?
@TKComedy2013 I love when science fiction explores obsession and legacy across time. Grady Duggar sounds like a fascinating character. Can’t wait to read!
@AuthorMichael57@MaryLSchmidt Your book captures something so universal yet so personal. Grief through a child’s eyes is powerful. Following with interest.
