Armistice Day, 1921: USA 🇺🇸: At @ArlingtonNatl Cemetery the Unknown Soldier is laid to rest. General John J. Pershing, who had led the American troops during World War I and General John. A. Lejeune, the Marine Corps commandant, raised their hands in salute.
Armistice Day, 1921: 🇦🇺AUSTRALIA: The Australian Returned Soldiers and Sailors Imperial League has started selling poppies for Armistice Day. For this drive, the League imported one million silk poppies, made in French orphanages. Each poppy was sold for a shilling.
It has taken 103 years for the family of Ammunition Driver Albert Nicholson to finally have closure.
His mother wanted this inscription on his headstone:
“Great is our sorrow but God knows best,
He has taken our loved one home to rest.”
