One thing I’ve realized about LinkedIn is how it opens global doors you didn’t even know existed in the first place.

Last year, one of the best decisions I made was to build a solid LinkedIn profile, not necessarily about followers count or even LinkedIn growth (I’ve never even talked about LinkedIn growth because honestly, I’m still figuring out the platform myself). But as a social media person, you just have to let people see the truth of what you can do in how you structure your own profile.

I built my profile to tell my story, show the value I bring, and properly structure it around the things I want to be known for.

A few days ago, I got an email from a very big African company. They said they found me on LinkedIn and that my profile fits what they’re looking for. Thank God I added my email address to my About section, because that’s probably where they got it. Imagine if it wasn’t there. Imagine if the profile wasn’t structured or positioned well enough.

And this isn’t the first time. I’ve received countless emails like this before, sometimes I say yes, sometimes I turn them down depending on my availability.

One thing I’m grateful for is that everything you need to decide if I should be hired is already on my profile: my experience, the structure, the quality of the content, the value, and the work I share.

Honestly, anytime I get to advise someone on which platform to really build on, you can choose any other platform, but trust me, I’ll always give it up for LinkedIn.

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve seen internship and volunteer roles being used to quietly avoid paying for real work. I’ve even taken internship roles myself, only to realize they weren’t internships at all, just paid jobs in disguise. 🥸

When I sign up to intern, I expect to learn on the job, shadow experienced people, and grow my skills in a structured way. When I volunteer, it’s because I want to contribute meaningfully, not because I want to be silently slotted into a role that would normally require a salary.

This doesn’t apply to intentional mentorship or volunteering for a thoughtful leader you genuinely want to learn from, those are stepping stones worth taking.

But too often, I’ve noticed how value and experience have become a convenient shield for brands to get full-time work at little or no cost.

You call someone a volunteer yet hand them the responsibilities of a paid employee. You hire an intern but load them with the duties of a senior staff member.

And When you look closely, it’s not internship oo, exploitation dressed as an entry-level opportunity. 😂😭

If a role truly demands the scope, skills, and accountability of a paid staff member, it should be compensated. Time, skill, and energy are not free. If you can’t afford to pay, then adjust the expectations or be honest about the limitation. Anything else is just taking advantage.
