This one time, at work, our stationary cupboard was empty and I needed some basics. One thing I wanted, was a stapler. Supplies were not coming in, so I just ordered some things online and paid it myself, and submitted an expense claim for it. Now, this is a large, multi-million revenue, international company. When I got to work one morning, I was summoned to the Regional Manager's office.

I got a thorough scolding for my purchase. At first I thought it was maybe too expensive, but no. It wasn't. It was because I bought from a shop that was owned by a white man and not a BEE vendor, or company with black owners.

A stapler.

A cheap one.

It was explained that every single Rand is audited and that our company could lose our own BEE Level-1 Rating, if we didn't follow the rules closely.

I repeat. A stapler.

Our main client is government entities in the infra bussiness. We invoice millions in professional fees, but buying a stapler from a white man nearly brought the house down.

That day, something changed in me. I think I was in some mental state all along of ignoring these anti-white laws. That day, reality hit me.

People can say what they want about this, but if your income is subject to BEE rules, you know how deep and pervasive these laws are.

It's never been about whether the seller was white or black for me. I didn't even think about it. I just needed a friggin stapler. The impact of BEE is far reaching, it does not just affect those dealing directly with government. It seeps further into the economy and also affects those companies do business with them. And they in turn struggle.

Every now and then, I hear of someone attending a Racial Awareness talk at their workplace. Without fail, at every single one of these, whiteness is demonized and attacked. They sit. They listen.

I've seen with my own eyes how a quote was increase by 50% for office furniture, because the first quote was not BEE compliant. The guy just said he has a BEE company he works with for compliance reasons. Same furniture. 50% compliance tax slapped on to make our HR BEE police happy.

There are so many stories, we should actually collate it all in a book and share the real-world madness of these laws with the world.
