@LoganGrafTax We just had a client receive a Failure-to-file penalty for the fiscal year ending 4/30/23. It's a calendar year filer that has always been a calendar year filer and we have the eFile acceptance showing that it was filed on time and accepted.
14 lessons on the road to overcoming Imposter Syndrome:
Set realistic expectations for "good enough" - the bar is often lower than you think. Don't let perfectionism hold you back.
The world is not a meritocracy. Success comes from a mix of capability, effort, visibility, and luck. Don't assume those more successful necessarily have more merit.
If you don't step up to fill a need, who will? Somebody has to be the solution, even if imperfect.
The world is not a meritocracy. Success comes from a mix of capability, effort, visibility, and luck. Don't assume those more successful necessarily have more merit.
Find side doors to success rather than following the conventional path. Perception and positioning can become reality.
You're biased to focus on a few negative experiences over many positive ones. Consciously balance your perspective.
Have hard conversations to prune problematic clients. A few changes can dramatically improve your mindset and free you to aim higher.
Nobody starts as an expert. Expertise comes from learning by doing over time, not reaching some arbitrary threshold first.
Your internal identity lags your external reality by 1-2 years. Others likely see you as more competent than you feel.
Everyone is "making it up as they go", even experts. Accept uncertainty and earnestly do your best rather than posturing.
Initiative matters more than current capability. No one else is better positioned than you to create the change you envision.
Being helpful and doing right by people is the core of success. Tune out unproductive mental chatter and keep your focus there.
If you don't start, you can never gain the experience to become great. Get in the game and iterate.
Those you admire or envy deal with the same impostor syndrome struggles, just at a different level. You're not uniquely inadequate.
@JStaatsCPA I missed the end of the story, so I thought someone really hijacked your story to sell their new accounting product. I'm looking forward to checking out Accounting Moo in the multiverse.
PSA: be wary of ads that say something like “your CPA will never tell you about this tax loophole”. Odds are, if your CPA specializes in tax (most don’t), they know about the strategy & there is a reason they do not suggest it, despite what your cousin’s brother’s friend claims.
