It's finally happening, y'all. The first real storm system of fall is showing up in the forecast.

The heat dome that's been parked over Texas since mid-July starts breaking down Sunday into Monday. That lets our first big upper-level trough of the season dip in Monday through Wednesday — that dip in the jet stream is what we've been waiting on for months. Guidance brings a line of showers and storms west to east across the state.

Before anybody breaks out the flannel: this is about rain, not cold. No big cool-down behind it, and above-average temperatures look likely to hang around next week. Far too soon to say if any storms go strong or severe.

Today out west, there's a Level 3 of 4 flood risk on the western edge of the state. Most of it is New Mexico, but it technically includes El Paso, the Guadalupe Mountains and the western Panhandle around Dalhart. Multi-inch totals are possible where storms linger tonight.

Today out east, very high to extreme fire danger in the Ark-La-Tex, around Toledo Bend and through the Piney Woods.

The rest of us? Mid to upper 90s. Austin and Laredo still hitting 100. On September 23rd.

Also watching Hurricane Polo off Baja — not a threat to Texas, but its moisture could make next week's rain more efficient if it gets pulled north.
