Rene Ze Nguele: The Biya-Appointed Senator Who Challenged a CPDM 'Dictatorship'
Despite being appointed Senator by President Paul Biya, Rene Ze Nguele refused to toe the party line in Congress on Saturday.
The former Minister and ex-board chair of IRAD was the only ruling party lawmaker to openly oppose the bill empowering the President to appoint and dismiss the Vice Presidentโa post being reintroduced after more than 50 years.
The lawmaker from the East region, the oldest of Cameroon's 100 senators, said publicly what many CPDM officials only dare whisper in private: "We no longer have democracy" in Cameroon.
In his intervention in Congress, he said: "Democracy relies on the people and their leaders. And it is the people who designate the leaders. When leaders encroach on the activities of the people, that poses a problem. We no longer have democracy. We have everything except that. This reform is problematic for me."
He wanted the bill reintroducing the Vice President sent back to Biya for adjustments, arguing that an appointed VP would rob Cameroonians of the democratic right to choose their potential President. His argument aligned with that of opposition parties in Parliament, such as the SDF, which had raised similar concerns.
Despite Senator Ze Nguele's plea and a definite boycott of the vote by the opposition, CPDM parliamentarians and senators overwhelmingly voted for the bill.
Senator Ze Nguele's action, to many observers, indicates that a voice of reason still exists, even within the CPDM.
He rejection of the bill may have partly been informed by what he witnessed before 1972, when he served as Minister under the Ahidjo government.
At that time, the Vice President was elected, and the law required that the President and Vice President be one Anglophone and one Francophoneโa provision that ensured power balance.
He was embarrassed by what transpired in Congress today.
