In literature, phantom copying is an act of creating multiple copies of the same story and publishing each copy as though it’s unique and separate from the original—the characters or the actors’ names may have changed or been corrupted, but the storyline is almost always the same. For instance, the Benin version of the story of Oduduwa is a phantom copy of the “Mecca origin theory” concocted by the Oyo Muhammedans. The “Mecca origin theory” is also a phantom copy of “Mesopotamia/Iraq origin theory” invented by Sultan Muhammed Bello of Sokoto.
The Benin claim that Oduduwa is from Edo and his original name was Ikaladeran. According to them, “when Ikaladeran arrived in Ile Ife, he changed his name to Izoduwa (also Oduduwa).” The story goes: “Ikaladeran was an Edo prince, who was sent into exile and settled in Ile Ife. And when his father died, he was called upon to take over his father's throne, but he rejected the offer and sent his son (Oromiyana) to rule, instead.” This phantom story is barely 50 years old.
Similarly, the Oyo Muhammedans claim that Oduduwa was an Arabian prince, who was exiled from Mecca after the death of his father, King Lamurudu. Oduduwa was allegedly sent into exile from Mecca and settled in Ule Ufe. This Mecca origin theory is barely 160 years old—it’s narrated allegedly to Samuel Johnson, a Yoruba historian, when he visited Oyo in 1887. Samuel Johnson subsequently cited this narrative in his book “The History of Yoruba,” published in 1921. The “Benin origin theory” is clearly an embellishment of the “Mecca origin theory,” both of which are false.
Lastly, the “Mecca origin theory” is also a phantom copy of the “Mesopotamia/Iraq origin theory” that was invented by Sultan Muhammed Bello of Sokoto, the son of Uthman Dan Fodio. In his book “Infaqul Maysur,” published in 1821, Sultan Bello claimed that the original Yoruba ancestors were the Canaanites, the descendants of Nimrod, who left Iraq because of internal conflicts (driven out by Yarub son of Khatab) that led to their persecution until they arrived at lower Niger, Yorubaland, today. This “Iraq origin theory” was narrated to the Scottish Explorer Hugh Clapperton, when he visited the Sokoto palace of Sultan Bello in 1821. He subsequently cited this narrative in his book “The Narrative of Travels and Discoveries in Northern and Central Africa: In the Years 1822, 1823, and 1824 (2 volumes).” Chronologically, one can easily see that the “Benin origin theory” is a phantom copy of the “Mecca origin theory,” which is in turn a phantom copy of the “Mesopotamia/Iraq origin theory”— all fictitious and products of contorted delirium to falsify Yoruba history.
In all, the Yoruba aborigines themselves claim, in their pantheon, that their ancestors came from Ule Ufe (now Ile Ife)—this is the “local origin theory.” They further claim that Oduduwa was one of the Irunmole, who was sent by Olodumare (the most high) to Ule Ufe to make the world habitable for humans. It is also said that the historical Oodua (the Orisa), who’s often mistaken for Oduduwa (the Irunmole), was an imperial king of Ule Ufe who came originally from Òkè Ọ̀rà. The “local origin theory” stands on its own; it isn’t a phantom copy of stories invented outside of Yorubaland.
"Buhari, a Muhammedan, went to Saudi Arabia, where he was given a 5-minute tour of the Kaaba before he was sent packing.
The Ooni of Ife (Arole Oodua), a traditionalist, went to Brazil, and he was met with the Brazilian president and lawmakers. In honor of the Oonirisa, the president of Brazil declared a Brazilian territory, Quilombo, a Yoruba territory.
When you embrace your ancestors and your system, the world embraces you."
