@MRA_Nigeria Media Rights Agenda (MRA) today secured another legal victory against the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) in the Commission’s efforts to set aside a Federal High Court’s judgment perpetually restraining it from imposing fines on radio and television stations.
In a unanimous decision, the Court of Appeal in Abuja struck out the NBC’s Notice of Appeal, describing it as “fundamentally defective” and incompetent. This is the second appeal that the NBC has lost to MRA at the Court of Appeal in Abuja within 10 weeks.

We at the @WSoyinkaCentre welcome the Court of Appeal’s decision to strike out the National Broadcasting Commission’s appeal against the judgment obtained by the @MRA_Nigeria, restraining it from imposing fines on broadcast stations.
For us at #WSCIJ, this development speaks to a broader issue at the heart of our work: the need for an enabling environment in which journalism can operate independently, safely, and in the public interest.
Through the Centre's Civic Space Guard initiative, anchored on the Journalism and Civic Space Status Reports and, most recently, Shrinking Freedoms (2024), we have consistently tracked and analysed patterns of restrictions on media freedom and civic space in Nigeria.
Across these reports, a consistent pattern emerges: civic space violations are not isolated events but part of a broader environment of pressure that affects how journalism is practised and how information reaches the public. These evidence-based insights continue to reinforce the urgent need for stronger legal and institutional safeguards to protect media freedom and uphold democratic accountability.
This ruling is therefore significant not only as a legal victory but also as a reminder that the protection of press freedom requires strong constitutional safeguards, respect for due process, and sustained efforts to strengthen the media ecosystem.
We celebrate @MRA_Nigeria for its persistence in advancing media rights and freedom of expression, and we welcome this outcome as a positive step for journalism, civic space, and democracy in Nigeria.

@realMaalouf She is absolutely right! This is also how modest Muslim men ought to dress, and Muslim men who don’t dress ‘modestly’ like her don’t deserve to be respected.
FCTA directs hotels, event centres to deal only with INEC-recognised party leaders
The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has directed owners of hotels, event centres and other public facilities in Abuja to deal only with leaderships of political parties recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The administration also warned that any property used for gatherings of what it described as illegal organisations risks losing its title documents.

Are you a learner? An individual will call a media house for a chat or interview for free? Who pays for their journalists' time? Who pays for the equipment deployed? Who pays for the live broadcast of the interview. Who pays for the electricity generated to be able to transmit?
@Imranmuhdz Did Channel TV get paid, and what form of payment is involved? I used to think these interviews were free and done based on invitations. This is the first time I am hearing about payments.
