According to the article, newly surfaced photos, archival material, and historical records raise questions about her family’s connections to General Morgan, widely known as the Butcher of Hargeisa.

Morgan oversaw the late-1980s campaign that bombed Hargeisa and Burco and killed tens of thousands of civilians.

The article notes that Omar’s late father was a colonel in Barre’s army during this period. It argues this is especially contentious because Omar has taken a firm stance against Somaliland’s independence.
