#Somali Civil Society has issued an immediate press release expressing concern over the current political tensions and developments surrounding the planned demonstrations announced by leaders of the Somali Future Council. The statement emphasizes the importance of protecting citizens’ constitutional rights, including freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.
The press release calls on all political stakeholders to exercise restraint, uphold the rule of law, and prioritize dialogue as the most effective path toward resolving political differences, preserving peace, stability, and national unity in #Somalia.

The brazen attack against Ugaas Abdirizak Ugaas Fara’Adde and former PM @HassanAKhaire, along with other politicians and traditional elders, is a dangerous provocation by @HassanSMohamud whose term has expired on 15 May 2026. We call on the former president to cease his senseless actions. #Somalia
⚡️BREAKING: #Somali opposition politician @Aynte, leader of @XisbigaXaqsoor and the Xaqsoor & Haybad Qaran alliance, has accused incumbent President @HassanSMohamud of ordering a raid on a house where he said senior figures from his constituency, led by the Murusade clan chief, were present.
In a phone interview with @ArlaadiMnetwork, he expressed support for opposition protests and urged dialogue on the country’s 2026 election structure, warning that any harm to Ugaas Abdirisak Ugaas Abdullahi Ugaas Faracadde would be blamed on the outgoing federal government leadership.
State Department report to Congress on
potential areas for improved U.S. engagement with Somaliland: “The U.S. recognizes the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia, which includes the region of Somaliland. Within that framework, the United States maintains a positive, constructive relationship with Somaliland and continues to explore additional opportunities for engagement with Somaliland authorities.” https://t.co/nZaPbCapwC
The discussion of Somalia's sub-national political landscape is quite ironic. It is said there will be an "election", yet the president has given the seats to certain candidates in the upcoming "dispensation." This is a contradiction in terms. This implies that the seats in South-West, Galmudug, and Hirshabelle are effectively owned by President @HassanSMohamud, who can easily hand them over to friends.
Subsequently, the president's party and the Election Commission will orchestrate a theatrical performance around his decision, finishing it off with a lineup, cameras, and computers. This is a joke. Why not simply make direct appointments?
The whole exercise reveals that the government's electoral and party systems are not suitable for the Somali context.

Beryahaan warka beledka yaal wuxuu u badan yahay doodaha la xiriira sida loo abbaarayo maamul-goboleedyada muddo-dhaafka ah. Waxaad maqlaysaa “Madaxweynuhu wuxuu kuraasta maamul-goboleedyada siiyey musharraxiin saaxiibadiis ah” Haddana, waxaa hadalka ku jira ‘ereyga doorashada.” Macnuhu waa in kuraasta maamul-goboleedyada uu Xassan Sheekh leeyahay oo uu qofkuu doono siin karo. Yaab!
Marka uu madaxweynuhu bixiyo kuraasta ayaa xisbiga iyo guddiyadu billaabayaan jilitaanka riwaayad lagu xalaalaynayo go’aanka – dad la safayo iyo kaamerooyin iyo computer-kii tiradu ku jirtay. Haddiiba ay sidaas tahay oo kuraasta uu madaxweynuhu leeyahay maxaa dadka loo wareerinayaa? Muu magacaabo dhammaantood?
Waxa kaliya oo ka soo baxay isku-dayga dowladda waa in nidaamyada doorashooyinka iyo kan xisbiyada ee ay wataan, aysan ahayn kuwii ku habboonaa Soomaalida.
GUDOMIYE @Aynte is articulate, intelligent, and logical when it comes to the 1P1V debate.
Unfortunately, the former president and his sycophants seem unwilling to engage with opposing views. Rather than constructive dialogue, they appear determined to push the country toward conflict and division.
Honored to deliver a keynote at @AfricaProg’s roundtable on “navigating #Somalia’s electoral impasse.”
Representing the opposition viewpoint, I argued that President @HassanSMohamud’s administration — whose term expired on 15 May 2026 — has systematically dismantled the 4 pillars of Somalia’s Third Republic:
(1) the provisional constitution
(2) federalism
(3) the four-year electoral cycle
(4) the 4.5 power-sharing system
I also outlined 5 minimum conditions for a credible election:
(1) political agreement between government and opposition
(2) full transparency and competitiveness
(3) protection of voters’ and candidates’ constitutional rights to elect and be elected
(4) one-day nationwide voting across the country
(5) strict adherence to the provisional constitution

This week, Professor @lhammondsoas chaired a roundtable meeting where panellists – Abdirahman @Aynte, Dr Surer Mohamed and @Aweis_ahmedsom analysed the #Somalia’s political landscape, domestic and regional implications of potential instability, and possible ways forward for achieving an agreed political framework.
From Chatham House, London
H.E.@Aynte , Chairman of Xaqsoor Party, today highlighted growing tensions between Somalia’s Federal Government (FGS) and opposition groups over upcoming elections and constitutional reforms — raising serious risks of instability and conflict.
Key points shared:
🔹 Revisions to the 2012 provisional constitution remain deeply contested, particularly over universal suffrage and power-sharing arrangements between federal and regional authorities. Jubaland and Puntland have each suspended cooperation with the FGS at different points.
🔹 The new non agreed constitution, signed into law in March 2026, establishes five-year terms and extends the incumbent President mandate by one year although the President himself sweared numerous times that he will seek extension.
🔹 Opposition alliance Somali Future Council maintains the presidential term expired on 15 May, warning it may establish a parallel administration if no agreement is reached on elections or constitutional matters.
🔹 H.E. Aynte also raised serious concerns over ongoing land grabs and the arrest of activists across the capital.

Wonderful to reconnect with @Aynte today @ChathamHouse to discuss developments in #Somalia 🇸🇴
As the original Presidential term expires, it’s imperative that negotiations between the Federal Government & opposition continue, to reach an agreed framework for the elections.
