So here’s the gist
The person with HIV was a 63 year old Norwegian man who was receiving human stem cell transplantation (HCST) as treatment for myelodysplastic syndrome.
The donor was his brother.
But here’s the twist. Five years after completing HSCT, his blood, gut, and bone marrow samples, revealed no detectable viral reservoirs of HIV meaning he was functionally cured of the disease.
The question now is how?
Well, remember his brother the donor? Turns out he had the CCR5Δ32 mutation.
This mutation confers resistance to the most common forms of HIV-1, the predominant HIV variant so people with this mutation technically can't get infected with HIV.
The case, which is documented in the journal nature microbiology, is the first in which HIV remission has resulted after a stem cell donation from a sibling.
And the good news is he’s not the only one.
The Oslo patient is among just a few others from around the world, including London, Berlin, and New York, who have been functionally cured of HIV following a stem cell transplant in which the donor had the CCR5Δ32 mutation.
Hopefully, we may soon be living in a world where HIV becomes a thing of the past.
That's the beauty of science!
