Rational conservative who wants the Conservative Party of Canada to embrace economic libertarianism

The red carpet treatment for MAGA north / Alberta separatist “influencers” at the @CPC_HQ Convention was a huge mistake, as I pointed out to CPC staff at the time.

If they wanted to buy a media or observer pass and “report” from the convention, no worries.

But why would Canada’s founding political party give a platform or special treatment to people consistently siding with those threatening our economy, sovereignty, and unity?

If the Conservative Party is to win a future election, it must clearly distance itself from these toxic anger merchants.

@jkenney I like your posts generally but this one is really dumb. The loonie fell, as did per capita GDP in 2014, when oil prices fell. You can't pinthis on Trudeau as he wasn't PM at the time; although his policies indeed did great harm which is why our situation hasn't improved since.

Conservatives are disappointed that the United States has chosen to impose further unjustified tariffs on Canada. They threaten the jobs and livelihoods of families right across our country.

Canadians must stand united to defend our country against these unfair attacks on our jobs and businesses. Canada cannot accept one-sided tariffs that will deindustrialize our country. Nor can we accept a bad deal. Instead, we must continue the fight for tariff-free trade. Conservatives support action to protect Canadians and our industries targeted by these unfair U.S. tariffs.

We also need urgent economic reforms to restore growth, protect jobs and save our industry. That must include ending the industrial carbon tax, repealing anti-development laws, green lighting the 500 economic projects awaiting federal approval and major tax reforms to return investment to our country, reward work, and recharge our economy.

There was a time when Poilievre was honest about economics. That’s what made him such a formidable opponent: his arguments were difficult to pick apart. Now he sounds like the grifting influencer low IQ "brain trust," orbiting him.

Here are the facts: Headline inflation rose to 3%, driven in part by gasoline prices, which jumped 25.7% because of the conflict in the Middle East. Excluding gasoline, inflation was 2.2%. Grocery inflation actually fell, from 3.9% to 3.1%. And 3% is the top of the Bank of Canada's 1–3% target range, not "higher than the target."

It's past time for the Conservative Party of Canada to end slavish devotion to the supply management cartel.

It violates our free market principles, inflates food prices for struggling families, and undermines our global trade interests which impairs other, much larger sectors of Canadian agriculture.

All of this to appeal to 9000 quota farmers, half of whom are in Quebec.

And this👇is what the pandering has gotten the @CPC_HQ: the dairy lobby wedded to the Liberals.

Enough already.

Australia and New Zealand have shown the way. Both ended their supply management systems, and saw the sector thrive and grow as a result.

Of course, Canada should not do this unilaterally given pressure from the US. As @jengerson has argued, phasing out supply management to benefit Canadians wouldn't require dropping tariffs / quotas on US dairy exports, without reciprocal trade concessions from the US. (As I've noted before, US ag protectionism and subsidies are much broader than Canadian supply management.)

Regardless, Conservatives should be true to our principles by reverting to the Reform Party era policy of free market farming.

Politically, that would mean championing the interests of 40 million consumers over those of 9000 supply management operators.

The scam artist in the Indian knows there’s a Canadian audience for his sob story. Don’t fall for it! I too, came to Canada as an international student, and my father moved heaven and earth to pay my tuition. When it became clear there was no way I could fund my graduate program, I left and also my student visa was about to expire. I returned later when I had the money and I still had a spot in the program.

Notice how this sob story is rarely attempted in Gulf countries or elsewhere with large Indian migrant populations. Why? Because everyone understands that temporary residence is temporary. It is only in Canada that disappointment is repackaged as victimhood and a visa is treated as a down payment on citizenship.

Canada has no obligation to honour the misleading marketing of diploma mills, or the fraudulent promises of crooked overseas immigration consultants.

Caveat emptor.

When you apply for and receive a study permit, you sign off multiple times clearly accepting the terms. It is *patently* clear to any responsible adult that they must leave at the end of their authorized period, and there is no promise from Canada, implicit or explicit, that their TRV will magically turn into permanent residency.

Canada circa 1960 to 2015 was one HELL of a ride. One of the richest countries on earth without any of the social ills and geopolitical complications of any of the other rich countries. There are very few people who could come out of that with any sense of reality.
