ECOWAS DEPLOYS MEDIUM-TERM OBSERVERS TO GUINEA AHEAD OF THE COUNTRY’S PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION.

As part of its support toward restoring constitutional order in the Republic of Guinea, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has deployed a Medium-Term Election Observation Mission (MTEOM) to Guinea.

The fifteen-member technical team arrived in the Guinean capital on Thursday, December 18, 2025, to begin their assessment ahead of the presidential election scheduled for December 28, 2025.  Approved by the President of the ECOWAS Commission, H.E. Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, the mission is led by Mr. Serigne Mamadou Ka, acting Head of the ECOWAS Electoral Assistance Division.

ECOWAS adopts measures to reduce Air transport taxes and charges and lower the cost of air travel in west Africa, from 1st January 2026

The Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), at their December 2024 Summit in Abuja, adopted a landmark measure to reduce the cost of air travel across the region. From 1 January 2026, all ECOWAS Member States will abolish air transport taxes and reduce passenger and security charges by 25 percent, in line with a Supplementary Act on Aviation Charges, Taxes and Fees.

The decision responds to long-standing concerns about the high cost of flying in West Africa, which has constrained tourism, trade and the free movement of persons and goods.

Implementation of the reform will be monitored by the ECOWAS Commission through a Regional Air Transport Economic Oversight Mechanism, with the expected outcome of lower airfares, increased passenger traffic, stronger regional airlines and deeper regional integration... https://t.co/mnEOtsfYkI

The ECOWAS Parliament receives the Report on the State of the Community from H.E. Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission.

Mandated by Article 32 of the Supplementary Act A/SA.1/12/16 relating to the Enhancement of the Powers of the ECOWAS Parliament, the report highlights the Community’s progress, challenges, and priorities for the year ahead. Parliament also gives its opinion on the draft ECOWAS budget before it goes to the Council of Ministers.
