I am genuinely astonished that, after Donald Trump has spent the past two years stripping Ukraine of virtually all Congressionally-approved aid, threatening Ukraine, fawning over Putin and bending over backwards to please him in every conceivable way, blaming Ukraine for being invaded, hurling vicious, absurd insults, blackmail, and torrents of lies at it, twisting its arm to force it into capitulation, humiliating it with his antics, making it a scapegoat for his own failures and incompetence in the eyes of voters, and now openly and definitively entering into direct collusion with the Kremlin and siding with it in exchange for promised corrupt “business opportunities” for himself, his family, and his inner circle -- there are still people who have the nerve search with a magnifying glass for ways in which Zelensky failed to kiss Trump's ass enthusiastically enough to explain why he has been treating Ukraine this way.

What do you say to your family when you don’t know if you’ll ever see them again?

In February 2022, he told his wife and children the war had begun. Then he left as Russian forces advanced towards Kyiv, unsure what the coming hours would bring.

This is President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Before politics, he built a successful career in Ukrainian television as a writer, producer and performer, even portraying a president on screen. In 2019, he was elected President of Ukraine. Three years later, Russia launched its full-scale invasion.

Sitting down with him was surreal and an enormous responsibility. It was a rare chance to hear his account of the first hours of the war and the decisions that followed.

We discussed things like:

How he found out Russia had invaded.
Why he refused an offer to evacuate Kyiv.
The 64km Russian military convoy advancing towards the capital.
How Russian forces tried to capture a key airport.
His account of discovering hundreds of bodies after Russian occupation.
What he believes it will take to end the war.

But I also wanted to understand how he’d been coping.

One of my first questions was simply, “How are you doing?” His answer was: “It’s hard.”

He spoke about meeting parents whose children had been killed. Some, he explained, simply ask him for a hug.

And as he spoke, there were tears in his eyes.

Whatever your views on the war or the decisions made by those involved, this is a rare opportunity to hear his account of events that have changed millions of lives.

Because behind every map, every headline and every political decision, there are real people.

Ukraine is not Russia. That's Putin’s problem – refusing to recognize a separate nation, refusing to recognize a separate country – that's what did him in. He was shown a military operation that was supposed to take three days. We found parade uniforms in their various military vehicles. They were literally marching to a parade. He still doesn't understand and doesn't want to admit that this is a different nation, a different people.

They were advancing on Kyiv from all directions. Their main goal was to seize the capital of Ukraine. They reached Kyiv. They trapped us, and then we started hammering them, and they didn't know what to do about it. They were especially shocked when they drove toward the capital and people were just throwing burning mixtures. People were setting their armor on fire. It wasn't a matter of some general being an idiot. I believe the one who gave the order just didn't fully realize what was happening.

Because what does taking Kyiv mean? When you've taken those towns on the way to Kyiv, you have to leave troops behind to hold those towns. And that takes a huge number of people. It's a pretty large territory. If the people inside offer resistance, then you need an army to hold every town. That was their mistake. They didn't even realize there would be resistance. That was their main mistake. That's it.

😂 Trump’s BS about a “very stupid general” who supposedly took a dirt road instead of a highway, causing Russia’s war to drag on for almost 5 years instead of just one day, was apparently too much even for the Russians to swallow.

🇷🇺 Two Russian State Duma deputies reacted to Trump’s made-up story.

State Duma deputy Vladimir Saybel, who fought in Ukraine and was awarded the title of Hero of Russia, commented:

“I’m not interested in the nonsense Trump came out with.”

Alexey Zhuravlyov, a member of the State Duma’s Defense Committee, had this to say:

“Trump always makes a lot of things up. He’s primarily a media personality who tries to provoke an immediate public reaction with his statements.

He’s the kind of person who, as we say in Russia, wouldn’t spare even his own father for the sake of a catchy phrase.

So I wouldn’t take his tall tales seriously, especially when it comes to things the U.S. president repeats several times.

He gets used to the fabrication, embellishes it with various details, and apparently, at some point, starts believing it himself.

It’s remarkable that this applies in large measure to international politics, where, one would think, a person’s word should be firm and reliable.

Trump has so devalued this sphere through his endless chatter that diplomacy now gets nowhere without signed documents. Everything else is just talk that cannot be used to hold anyone accountable.”
