If it's an error, doesn't feel like the kind of mistake human artist would do. I assume the so-called artist never sent you the arcade cabinet sketch or lineart without color as proof.

KOF was inspired by tournament in Fatal Fury. But universe wise, both stories are unrelated. Fatal Fury main characters are Terry and Rock. KOF main characters are Kyo, K', Ash, and Shun'ei.
