⚜ WHAT HAPPENS TO THE FLAMES OF PURGATORY WHEN HOLY MASS IS CELEBRATED?
Saint Jerome reveals an astonishing truth that should change our relationship with Masses offered for the dead.
There is an image that Saint Jerome proposes, and once seen, it never leaves the memory.
Imagine your parents in danger of drowning in a lake. Imagine simply reaching out to save them.
Who would hesitate at that moment?
No one. Love doesn't allow us to stand still in the face of the suffering of those we love.
But then comes the question that the saint launches like an arrow straight into the heart of those who have faith:
How is it possible that, in the light of faith, we see so many poor souls, perhaps those of our closest relatives, burning alive in a lake of fire, and we refuse to endure the small inconvenience of devoutly listening to a Mass for their liberation?
This question wasn't written yesterday. It's over fifteen hundred years old.
And yet it sounds as if it was made for this generation.
What Saint Jerome Taught About the Holy Mass and the Souls in Purgatory
Saint Jerome, one of the greatest Doctors of the Church, lived between 347 and 420 AD.
He was a translator of the Bible into Latin, produced the famous Vulgate, and spent decades in profound study of Scripture and Tradition.
His authority in teaching the faith has been recognized by the Church for centuries.
And it was this same Saint Jerome who recorded a teaching that every Christian should know by heart. Let's look at his words in full:
“When Mass is celebrated for a soul in Purgatory, that burning fire suspends its action, and the soul ceases to suffer for the entire time that the celebration of the Sacrifice lasts.”
(S. Hier., c. cum Mart. de celebr. Miss.)
Read carefully.
The saint is not saying that the Mass helps the souls a little.
He is saying that the fire suspends its action.
Completely. For the entire duration of Holy Mass.
It is as if God, upon receiving the sacrifice of the Son in the Eucharistic celebration, grants that soul an interval of total relief from suffering that purifies it.
And there is also a second revelation from the same Holy Doctor, equally astonishing:
“For every Mass that is said, many souls leave Purgatory and fly to heaven.”
(St. Jerome, cited work)
Not one soul. Not a few. Many souls. At each celebration.
What does this mean in practice for us?
We live in a time when death has been pushed to the sidelines. It is not talked about much, it is not contemplated, and when someone passes away, the tendency is for mourning to be short-lived and life to move on quickly. But the Catholic faith has always known that death is not the end of the relationship between the living and the dead.
Our departed relatives are not simply “resting in peace,” as is vaguely said today.
They are, probably, in a process of purification.
And this process can be shortened, alleviated, accelerated by our actions here on Earth.
The Mass is the most powerful suffrage that exists. It is the very sacrifice of Christ, offered again in an unbloody manner on the altar.
When we offer a Mass for a soul, we are not simply praying for it: we are presenting to God the only sacrifice He cannot refuse.
In light of what Saint Jerome taught, offering Masses for our dead is not a sentimental gesture. It is an effective act of mercy.
It is, literally, extending a hand to save someone who is drowning, as in the image that the saint himself proposes.
A debt that we often don't realize we have
Think of your dead.
Your father.
Your mother.
Your grandparents.
Friends who passed away early.
How many Masses were offered for them after their death?
How many are still offered regularly?
Saint Jerome asks, with all the frankness of a Doctor of the Church: what kind of heart is yours, if you can do this and you don't? The word he uses is harsh, but loving. He doesn't condemn. He shakes.

The Miracle Prayer
Lord, Jesus, I come before You, just as I am.
I am sorry for my sins,
I repent of my sins,
please forgive me.
In Your name,
I forgive all others for what they have done against me.
I renounce Satan,
the evil spirits and all their works.
I give You my entire self.
Lord Jesus, now and forever,
I invite You into my life Jesus.
I accept You as my Lord and Saviour.
Heal me, change me,
strengthen me in body, soul, and spirit.
Come Lord Jesus,
cover me with Your precious blood,
and fill me with Your Holy Spirit,
I love You, Jesus.
I praise You, Jesus.
I thank You, Jesus.
I shall follow You every day of my life.
Amen.

Our Father,
Who art in heaven,
hallowed be Thy name;
Thy kingdom come;
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
Amen.
A partial indulgence is granted to those who recite An Act of Reparation to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. A plenary indulgence is granted if it is publicly recited on the feast of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. This prayer was prescribed to be recited on this feast by Pope Pius XI.
Most sweet Jesus, whose overflowing charity for men is requited by so much forgetfulness, negligence and contempt, behold us prostrate before Thee, eager to repair by a special act of homage the cruel indifference and injuries to which Thy loving Heart is everywhere subject.
Mindful, alas! that we ourselves have had a share in such great indignities, which we now deplore from the depths of our hearts, we humbly ask Thy pardon and declare our readiness to atone by voluntary expiation, not only for our own personal offenses, but also for the sins of those, who, straying far from the path of salvation, refuse in their obstinate infidelity to follow Thee, their Shepherd and Leader, or, renouncing the promises of their baptism, have cast off the sweet yoke of Thy law.
We are now resolved to expiate each and every deplorable outrage committed against Thee; we are now determined to make amends for the manifold offenses against Christian modesty in unbecoming dress and behavior, for all the foul seductions laid to ensnare the feet of the innocent, for the frequent violations of Sundays and holydays, and the shocking blasphemies uttered against Thee and Thy Saints.
We wish also to make amends for the insults to which Thy Vicar on earth and Thy priests are subjected, for the profanation, by conscious neglect or terrible acts of sacrilege, of the very crimes of nations who resist the rights and teaching authority of the Church which Thou hast founded.
Would that we were able to wash away such abominations with our blood. We now offer, in reparation for these violations of Thy divine honor, the satisfaction Thou once made to Thy Eternal Father on the cross and which Thou continuest to renew daily on our altars; we offer it in union with the acts of atonement of Thy Virgin Mother and all the Saints and of the pious faithful on earth; and we sincerely promise to make recompense, as far as we can with the help of Thy grace, for all neglect of Thy great love and for the sins we and others have committed in the past.
Henceforth, we will live a life of unswerving faith, of purity of conduct, of perfect observance of the precepts of the Gospel and especially that of charity. We promise to the best of our power to prevent others from offending Thee and to bring as many as possible to follow Thee.
O loving Jesus, through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mother, our model in reparation, deign to receive the voluntary offering we make of this act of expiation; and by the crowning gift of perseverance keep us faithful unto death in our duty and the allegiance we owe to Thee, so that we may all one day come to that happy home, where with the Father and the Holy Spirit Thou livest and reignest, God, forever and ever. Amen.
HOW TO RECEIVE A PLENARY INDULGENCE ON THE FEAST OF THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS ⤵️
📅 Friday, June 12, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, a feast honoring Christ's love and mercy for humanity.
On this feast day, the Church grants a plenary indulgence (the full remission of temporal punishment due to sins already forgiven) to the faithful who publicly recite the Act of Reparation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This can be done in a church, with your family, or in a religious community.
To receive the indulgence, the usual conditions also apply:
➜ Be free from attachment to all sin, even venial sin
➜ Receive the Sacrament of Confession within about 20 days before or after
➜ Receive Holy Communion, preferably on the feast itself
➜ Pray for the intentions of the Holy Father (such as one Our Father and one Hail Mary)
Many Catholics know this feast because of the promises associated with devotion to the Sacred Heart. But at its core is something much simpler. Jesus asks to be loved in return.
In a world that often ignores God or pushes Him aside, acts of reparation may seem unnecessary. Yet Catholics believe that love responds to love. The Sacred Heart reminds us that Christ's mercy is always available and that our prayers and sacrifices can be united to His love for the world.
This is a beautiful opportunity to return to Confession, receive Our Lord in the Eucharist, and entrust yourself and your family to His Sacred Heart.
Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us.
