NEWS: The fight over the tipped wage in D.C. isn't over yet. I've learned that proponents of Initiative 82, which was approved by voters in 2022 to phase out the tipped wage, are looking to call a referendum on the D.C. Council's summer bill that partially repeals the initiative.
Partially repeal? No, that’s a full repeal. Eliminating the unethical two-tiered wage system was the central point of i77 & i82. This keeps the awful system in place for perpetuity. Time for another ballot initiative 😐
NEWS: The D.C. Council has voted 7-5 to partially repeal Initiative 82, the voter-approved measure which phases out the tipped minimum wage in D.C. Here are the details of the repeal proposal, sponsored by @charlesallen and @chenderson: https://t.co/mghRJtiz2e
Voters want to get rid of the stupid two tiered wage system. It’s that simple. Any CM who votes to keep this unethical system in place is not listening to the will of the people! #initiative82
@AlexKomaDC@maustermuhle The voters have spoken! We don’t need to study it, we need to practice using it. The first practice should be in June 2026, the second practice in November 2026, the third practice in June 2028, and the final test in November 2028. It’s so simple.
DC can make Initiative 82 better: Rip the fucking bandaid off already! Eliminate the sub-minimum wage NOW! Ban service charges! I want a full minimum wage plus tips.
UPDATE: @CMLewisGeorgeW4 is circulating an amendment that would pull the proposed repeal of Initiative 82 out of the budget that’s being voted on today. “Cutting the wages of tipped restaurant workers yet again poses a significant financial hardship,” her office says.
Critter, a tipped worker in Ward 3, explains that the Council’s attempt to undo Initiative 82 is shameful, anti-democratic, and “an enforcement nightmare” driven only by restaurant industry greed.
But this budget repeals Initiative 82 with no forewarning to service workers about yet another blow to their wages. This is unacceptable.
I’m introducing an amendment striking the subtitle to prevent a wage cut to hardworking restaurant staff and uphold the will of the voters.
@BarredinDC Service charges should be banned in DC. They are the #1 reason greedy restaurant owners have been able to frustrate customers and blame i82.
@BarredinDC And tipped workers make more per hour ($11) than in DC! This repeal is absolute bullshit! Restaurants have higher overhead in NYC, but they have seemed to be able to pay their workers more. Greedy restaurant owners can eat a bag of dildos.
Why the hell are @MayorBowser and @ChmnMendelson blocking a badly needed wage increase for tipped workers? They're bought and paid for by the DC restaurant lobby and are a national embarrassment.

@Lokay@shawnjtownsend@RAMWdc Of course it is bad for business. Restaurant owners actually have to pay their workers a full wage instead of relying on customers tips. If California can have restaurants without the tipped credit system, why can’t DC? No elected official has been able to answer that question.
@MayorBowser Thanks for nothing Bowser. I made more money (pre&post i82) in California because the largest state in the Nation actually cares about its tipped workers and doesn’t have the ridiculous tipped credit system. Had 82 been fully implemented, I would have made more money in DC 🤬
