Will @Nike sell @RTFKT? Who are the likely candidates? What's the best case scenario? Is there any truth to the rumors or is it all complete conjecture?

In this post we're going to answer those questions and organize the chaos as we continue to monitor what could potentially be another shocking blockbuster newsbreak from the RTFKT crew, or a complete non-starter with no factual basis.

Rumor 1
Choose Rich Rumor
On July 5th, one of the three founders of RTFKT Zaptio posted a get hype "Clones are so back" message. Likely for no other reason than to celebrate the recent reemergence of interest in the maligned project, with relatively benign post. It was what followed that shocked the NFT community. @chooserich, who famously broke the Nike/RTFKT collapse months earlier than the announcement, posted "Hearing some rumors".

To anyone that has been paying attention, that post is a scorcher with the obvious implication that he has heard rumors of a potential RTFKT acquisition. Nick has called many bombshell rumors early that later played out exaactly as predicted. Most notably the RTFKT sunset. He's been more right than wrong with calls like this...but was he joking here, lightly trolling Zap?

There were two odd parts to this, one being that Nick is a web3 vet and knows the implications of a post like this, to be honest it didn't really hit like a joke, at least not in Nicks typical style. Second, he deleted the post most likely because it set X on fire for a moment and lead to a lot of speculation quickly. Again though, not really Nicks style either, he is willing to draw a line than jump over the line often, and doesn't often retract bombastic posts. Why now? Also, I believe he never mentioned anything about the post. Didn't say he was joking, or respond publicly to anyone concerning the validity of his post. Just deleted it and kept it moving, which on some level makes sense but on another is pretty odd.

Turns out Nick and Zap were at a social gathering that night, and attendee @wizardofsoho mentioned "It was a joke lol". Was this an attempt to cover for Nick and help sweep this under the rug? Who knows? I lean towards taking the wizards word for it, and think it was said in jest. Nick likely deleted it to quell the hype.

Verdict: It's odd, all of it, and doesn't add up, but going with a nothing burger here as there is no pure evidence to the contrary.

Rumor 2
Louis Vuitton will purchase RTFKT
In my opinion this is not happening. While it is true that Takashi Murakami has collaborated with Louis Vuitton successfully many times, and that Pharrell Williams is both the men's creative director at Louis Vuitton and the Chief Brand officer at Doodles (which links Louis Vuitton loosely to NFTs), I just do not see this happening. Dolce and Gabbana, Gucci, Burberry, Porsche all had what could only be called catastrophic forays into the NFT market. Web2 companies have shown that they just do not understand Web3 and refuse to appoint Web3 natives into powerful enough positions to do what needs to be done.

Would one of the most important brands in fashion want to pick up the pieces after Nike? Possibly to show support for the legend Takashi San, but I just do not see Louis Vuitton purchasing RTFKT.

Verdict: Not happening. Will eat my words if it does, wearing a Louis Vuitton bib. Actually, don't quote me on that, the bib probably costs $13,000

Rumor 3
Improbable will Purchase RTFKT
We hosted a space featuring Herman Narula of Improbable where he said that his team would possibly take the next step to contact Nike to inquire about an acquisition if the space went well. He mentioned that if he did he would be under an NDA and would not be able to speak about it further. After the space Herman confirmed that he was going to pursue the acquisition, with no promises made, but he was going to go to the next phase...whatever that phase is, we do not know. We have not heard from him since. Likely due to the NDA.

Will Improbable purchase? Are they the only suitors? If Nike is willing to listen to Improbable, it is likely that they are willing to listen to others. Would Improbable outbid others? They certainly have the cash to make a very strong bid, but will they? Who knows? Personally, I think this would be great as they have groundbreaking tech that can host tens of thousands of avatars in the same environment. Also, an acquisition by Improbable likely means interoperability with BAYC, which imo strengthens the entire space, and could possibly lead to a unification with other major projects and give the native Web3 projects a fighting chance at beating the trad 2 gaming incumbents to the digital property gold rush.

Verdict: With Herman himself mentioning that he will be under an NDA with Nike and proceeding to the next step, this seems to indicate that Nike is at least willing to listen to offers. Whether Improbable has a convincing enough offer remains uncertain. Herman did mention he offers no promises.

Best Case Scenario
Now that we've covered the three leading rumors related to an RTFKT acquisition, let's talk about what we believe is the best case scenario. This is not what we think will happen, but what we would like to see happen.

While it is nearly a certainty that Louis Vuitton does not purchase RTFKT, it seems reasonable that Takashi Murakami would end up with the IP. Why? Nike shelving something that a truly legendary modern artist Takashi Murakami put a lot of energy into is an extremely bad look on all fronts. Allowing the IP to return to Takashi San is a great PR move for Nike.

This comes with two caveats though. First, the Flowers project was not run well in my opinion. If Sensei does end up with it, hopefully the founders and key members of the team (Sam, Jarlan, CloneDreams, Jampants) are there in support to guide the project to succeed in web3. Many will say the founders were to blame for what happened with Nike, I do not believe this is the case. They were handcuffed and could not actually run the project effectively due to the strict control of their corporate overlords. They were extremely on point with the meta early before the acquisition.

Second caveat, Takashi and the team work with Herman Narula and Improbable to develop RTFKT city. A central hub with the RTFKT design language where the creators and the collectors can unite to build out a true creator economy. Interoperable with BAYC. If they do this, we all win. Clones, Apes, Creators, Collectors, and the NFT community.

Equally Best Case Scenario:
Improbable purchases RTFKT, and brings on Takashi and the team to build out the city.
